UPDATE: There will be a reading of playwright Deanne Stillman's "Reflections in a D'Back's Eye" in Taos this on October 19 at 2:00pm at The Metta Theatre. Deanne worked on this play during her time at HWF, which is directed by poet and actor Bruce McIntosh.

"Reflections in a D'Back's Eye" is an unexpected portrayal of gun violence in the US, by way of our fall from nature, looking at the mass shooting in which Gabby Giffords was wounded and a little girl who just wanted to play baseball was killed. It takes place in the Grand Canyon and includes "A Love Supreme" (Coltrane). It was a semi-finalist in the 2024 Echo Theater New Play Competition; received a two-day production at Highways in Santa Monica, just before the pandemic, directed by Darrell Larson, an associate of Sam Shepard (see image below). A monologue from it appears in Best Men's Stage Monologues (Smith and Kraus 2021), and it was also a semi-finalist for the 2019 Blues Ink Award from American Blues Theater.

It's based on an adaptation of my prose poem, published here - https://gwarlingo.com/2012/on-the-anniversary-of-the-tucson-shooting-a-new-work-by-deanne-stillman/

It’s typical for our alumni to leave Taos with a lasting connection, and it’s not uncommon for some to make it their home.

Join us at Abbie’s Studio Theater for The Poetic Eye, an evening salon featuring the work of HWF alumni Veronica Golos(Poet) and Elizabeth Diorio (Media Artist).
Sunday, August 17 at 7 PM
Abbie’s Studio Theater, 114 Los Pandos, park at Smith’s

From Abbie & William, the hosts:“
Is poetry just a genre, or is it also a form of consciousness? In this program, we are going to see how film and poetry can meet, and perhaps learn where they both come from in terms of the arts. Do they think in similar terms? Is poetry a form of awareness that applies equally to literary and visual arts? Do poetry and video art share a world of metaphors, associations, and abstractions of time? How do the arts shape our experience of the world?

Elisabetta will present her photography and video art, and Veronica will read her poems. The two presentations together will last one hour, then there will be a discussion with the audience to explore the correlations between the literary and visual arts.

This will be the 21st salon we have presented in our Taos studio which seats up to 60 people. We hope to see you there. All are welcome and the event is free.
