Beavers are often called one of nature’s greatest engineers, and their work has a remarkable impact on ecosystems. By building dams and slowing water flow, they create wetlands that retain moisture, support biodiversity, and reduce the spread of wildfire. Areas shaped by beavers can remain green and alive even after surrounding land has burned.

Many Indigenous communities have long understood the importance of working with nature rather than against it. Healthy ecosystems depend on balance, and animals like beavers play a role that modern development often overlooks. Their ponds help recharge groundwater, create habitats for countless species, and strengthen the resilience of entire landscapes.

As climate change increases the severity of droughts and wildfires, lessons from the natural world are becoming more important than ever. Sometimes the answers humanity searches for already exist in the systems the Earth created long ago. Protecting ecosystems often begins with respecting the species that help sustain them.

Shannon Lujan, 2024 Taoseña Award Recipient. Read her story and watch her video now. https://ow.ly/eUZr50QUJxb

Taos Pueblo native Shannon Lujan is a Public Health Nurse for the Taos Pueblo Health and Community Services whose dedication to the health and well-being of the Pueblo and surrounding Taos community has earned her a nomination for the 2024 Taoseña Awards.

Lujan’s interest in health care started when she was young. Growing up, Lujan was intrigued by stories her mother told of being a nurse assistant at the old Holy Cross. Seeing her grandparents receive hospital care, she quickly became aware of medical providers' importance in their lives.

Despite many years of experience, the pandemic presented an unforeseen challenge. During this time, Lujan stepped up, working with the Governor’s Office and Taos Pueblo Emergency Management Team in determining the best approach to COVID. As lead contact tracer, Lujan made daily phone calls with COVID-19-positive patients and organized the delivery of groceries and medications to those in quarantine.

“That was something our generation has never faced. Nobody in this lifetime was prepared for this pandemic,” says Lujan. “I can’t commend our people enough on being proactive and willing to do what was needed to prevent the spread. Rarely did I hear people complain.”

As a pivotal part of her community, Lujan quickly recognizes her success comes from the support of many. “I enjoy my job and am thankful for the opportunity to give back to the community that helped raise me. I hope to raise my children to be good people and good contributing members of the Taos Pueblo community.”
