What started as a horseback ride in the Medicine Bow Mountains for a graduation gift ended up being a 17 horse, 2 goat, 2 cat, and one peacock sanctuary known as Saving Grace Sanctuary. That first horseback ride on Whitney in July of 2013 lead to horseback riding lessons at Camp Hebron in Halifax. Those lessons led to a profound love of horses and the desire to have one of our very own. In Septemb
er of 2014, we moved to the farm in Taneytown, Maryland and two months later, our first retirees from Camp Hebron, Sam and Phil, came to live with us. Over the years, Camp Hebron has retired many horses at Saving Grace Sanctuary. We got loving, gentle horses, Camp Hebron was not faced with the dilemma of what to do with horses that could no longer withstand the daily rigors of lessons and trail rides; and, the horses got a safe, comfortable retirement home. Along the way, Saving Grace also took in miniature horses, goats, and cats that were either rescued or seized. About two years ago, a male peacock showed up, looking like he had been in a pretty bad fight and stayed. Our sister-in-law joked that the word was out - our farm has a pretty good place to live. Recently, we have taken in two sweethearts from a great farm in Gettysburg that provides battlefield horse back tours. While this is not what we ever envisioned on that first ride in the Medicine Bow Mountains, we have come to realize that there is a real need for a safe place for the retired horses to land. Seven years later, Saving Grace is now ready to take on new liasons with other programs, donors, and sponsors, and to let others know what the peacock, Pete, knew - Saving Grace Sanctuary is a pretty good place to live.
