The Tampa Bay Community Cancer Network (TBCCN) based at Moffitt Cancer Center, is a community-academic network of 28 community organizations and the cancer center. Housed in the Office of Community Outreach, Engagement, TBCCN is Moffitt’s 18+ year old community-academic partnership to address cancer disparities through outreach, education, and research.

🎨 Join Project COURAGE in a creative and educational endeavor! 🎨

In honor of National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, Project COURAGE is hosting an interactive information session on Wednesday, September 2, 2026 at 5:30pm at the Palmetto Branch Library where participants will learn about ovarian cancer and screening options. After the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to make art using the color teal to show support and spread awareness of ovarian cancer!

Our recent Patient Researcher Forum (PRF) brought together patients, caregivers, clinicians, and researchers for an engaging conversation about head and neck cancer, the caregiver experience and the impact of research in our community.

Hosted by Dr. Stuart Maudsley, along with COE at Moffitt Cancer Center, and the Patient Family Advisory Program under the guidance of Ms. Jacqueline Beaushaw, the PRF creates a space where community, patients and caregivers along with faculty researchers and clinicians can connect, share insights, and inspire one another.

We are especially grateful to Mrs. Brielle Humphreys for sharing her powerful story as a caregiver and Moffitt team member and family advisor. Brielle encouraged researchers to consider the well-being of families who lose loved ones to cancer.

Thank you also to our Moffitt clinical presenter, Dr. Kedar Kirtane, and research presenters Dr. Antonio L. Amelio from the Cancer Biology and Evolution program and Daniella Bowen, a student researcher with the ENCOURAGE program. We appreciated their perspectives on how research may shape early detection and treatment for head and neck cancer.

The PRF brings together lived experience and scientific expertise to help shape better research and better care.

Last month, Senior Community Outreach Worker Viviana Suarez delivered educational information on skin cancer prevention to multiple groups of workers across three different locations at Costa Farms in Apopka. She conducted sessions with three separate groups, totaling nearly 80 participants, including farm staff.

Additionally, Viviana engaged with the community to better understand their needs and provided them with sunscreen and cooling towels, along with recommendations for effective sun protection.

Coordinated by COE Research Community Health Educator Viviam Sifontes, the Mi Salud Importa health event marked its fifth year of serving the Orange County community. Estamos Unidos, one of Moffitt's Team Member Engagement Networks, joined the ongoing effort three years ago by putting together a team of collaborating members and donors to purchase 100 backpacks filled with school supplies to distribute among the health event attendees ranging from elementary to high school age. Every year, the Mi Salud Importa event welcomes over 150 families with more than 100 backpacks gifted. Congratulations on another successful year!

Organized by Senior Community Outreach Worker Viviana Suarez and in collaboration with Enterprising Latinas and Ana G. Mendez University, the community health fair will take place on Saturday, August 22 from 9:00am to 1:00pm at the Ana G. Mendez University - Tampa Campus (5225 Memorial Highway, Tampa, FL 33634).

The office of Community Outreach and Engagement will host an informational table, and the Moffitt Head and Neck clinic will be providing early detection screenings for head, neck, and oral cancers.

COE-SCORE is excited to work with new and returning Moffitt Community Scientists on the review of this year’s Miles for Moffitt pilot grant applications. Alongside Moffitt faculty members who provide scientific reviews of applications, Community Scientists evaluate the potential impact of proposed projects on cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, or quality of life for patients, families or communities. We are grateful for the time, perspectives, and expertise Community Scientists provide when reviewing internal pilot grant applications.

✨ Moffit Launches Project To Expand Ovarian Cancer Education and Prevention ✨

Project COURAGE is a unique community outreach initiative created in direct response to The Gail Baird Foundation's desire to ensure that women at risk of ovarian cancer receive timely education and services. This initiative brings together experts from Moffitt’s Office of Community Outreach, Gynecologic Oncology Program, Genetic Counseling and Testing Service, Health Outcomes and Behavior Program, and the T32 Postdoctoral Training Program in Behavioral Oncology. This group works together to provide education and linkage to testing through in-person and online workshops.

Participants receive information about cancer risk and may complete a genetic risk assessment to learn and understand if genetic counseling and testing is right for them. Currently, Project COURAGE serves women and families in Sarasota and Manatee counties with hopes of expanding into neighboring communities through Tampa Bay.

July is UV Safety Awareness Month. Did you know UV rays can cut straight through cloud cover? This means sun protection in Florida isn't a just a seasonal habit, it's a year-round necessity. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen 20 minutes before heading outside, and when you can, duck into shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun is strongest. Take a look at our animated county level irradiance map to see how UV irradiance fluctuates in Florida monthly at the county level in 2020.
