Tampa Sister Cities

Tampa Sister Cities To promote peace through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation—one individual, one community at a time. Tampa Sister Cities Committee, Inc.

is affiliated with Sister Cities International which was formed during President Dwight D. Eisenhower's administration. The purpose of Sister Cities was, and still is, to involve people and organizations at all levels of our society in personal diplomacy. Incorporated on July 12, 1967 as a non-profit corporation and defined in its articles of incorporation as a membership organization to foster be

tter international understanding and cooperation through Sister City relationships. The strength of an active and solid relationship between cities in the U.S. and abroad rests within a local committee and its volunteers who are willing to commit time, talent, and resources to develop and implement mutual exchange projects and programs with partners in another country. It is important to decide on a course of action from the affiliation's initiation and to implement the plan in an organized manner. Citizens of Tampa who have a desire to become directly involved with another culture and want to share their culture by linking with a community in another country can join the Tampa Sister Cities Committee, Inc. and participate in the many affiliations' activities.

Our first night in Barranquilla set the tone for an unforgettable visit.

We gathered at the iconic La Cueva with civic and cultural leaders for a tour, dinner, conversation, and live music celebrating the spirit of Barranquilla. The evening was generously sponsored by Ivonne Alvarez of RealNet Brokerage and Alfred Goldberg of Absolute Marketing Solutions.

Following dinner, we enjoyed a special night of music, including a guest performance by Veronica Venegas Fernandez.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make our first evening in Barranquilla so meaningful:

As we prepare for our 60th anniversary trip to Barranquilla, I was pleased to receive this remarkable letter from the city archives.

Dated September 21, 1983, the Mayor of Barranquilla wrote to Tampa Mayor Bob Martinez, expressing a desire to "reactivate" the relationship between our two sister cities and extending an invitation to visit. The letter also highlights the involvement of civic leaders working to strengthen ties between our communities.

We know that Tampa later donated police vehicles to Barranquilla, and it raises an interesting question—did this effort to reinvigorate the relationship help spark that generous act of partnership?

Moments like this remind us that Sister Cities relationships are not static—they require ongoing effort, leadership, and engagement to thrive.

As we look ahead to this milestone trip, it’s inspiring to reflect on the history that brought us here—and the opportunities that lie ahead.
