Several of you raised your hands to help care for Lake Gemma, and that is a great thing to see.

We are working with the county on a resident led effort, and neighbors have already stepped up to help form the group. Paperwork is in progress. It is outdoor work, done together, on a schedule the group sets, and no experience is needed.

School is back, and our streets get busy early again.

Ease off the gas through the neighborhood in the morning, especially near corners and parked cars. Kids at bus stops are hard to see before sunrise, so headlights on and phone down.

A county environmental specialist is joining our board meeting on Thursday, August 20 at 8pm.

If you have questions about our lakes and ponds, this is the meeting to be at. This is someone who works with these water bodies for a living, and they will take questions directly from residents.

We know the shoreline vegetation is on a lot of minds. We keep a standing contract for aquatic treatment on a regular schedule, and it runs in stages on purpose, because clearing everything at once kills off a large amount of plant material and fuels algae growth. Only rain belongs down the storm drain.

Everything that washes into a storm drain in our neighborhood ends up in our ponds and lakes. Grass clippings, fertilizer, pet waste, and litter all come along for the ride.

Sweep clippings back onto the lawn instead of into the street, bag pet waste, and keep the grates clear of debris. Small habits, cleaner water.

Taking part in association votes is about to get a lot easier.

The board approved electronic voting through our community portal. It is opt in, there is no added cost, and it will sit alongside the ways you already have to participate, in person or by proxy. Setup is underway and we will let you know when it opens.

August is when hurricane season really gets going in Florida.

Good weekend project: refresh your supply kit, charge your backup batteries, and walk your home and yard taking photos for your insurance records. Trim loose branches and put away anything that can become a projectile.

Doing it now beats doing it in a checkout line the day before a storm.

Tuesday tip: mosquitoes only need a bottle cap’s worth of water to breed.

Our summer rains leave standing water all over the yard, so the easiest way to cut them down is to tip and toss once a week.

Empty anything holding water: plant saucers, buckets, toys, tarps, clogged gutters, and the tray under the grill.

A quick walk around the yard after a good rain makes a real difference for your whole household, and your neighbors too.

Tuesday tip: in a hot, dry Florida summer, the goal is watering smart, not watering more.

Early morning is the best time, before the heat burns it off. Deep, less frequent watering builds stronger roots than a quick daily sprinkle.

Watering schedules apply year-round in our area, so follow the current Hillsborough County and SWFWMD guidelines for your address before you set your timer.

A little timing goes a long way toward a healthier lawn and less wasted water.
