Freedom is not free. It never has been.
For nearly 250 years, since the birth of our nation in 1776, the liberties we cherish have been secured through extraordinary sacrifice, defended by generations of brave Americans willing to lay down their lives in defense of liberty, duty, and the enduring promise of this nation. The freedoms we so often move through without pause were purchased at an immeasurable cost, paid in courage, in sacrifice, and in the blood of those who never came home.
Some are remembered through generations of family stories and folded flags. Others gave their lives so many generations ago that no family remains to speak their names, yet we owe them our remembrance just the same.
Memorial Day is our nation’s solemn reminder that freedom carries a price.
It is a day to remember the sons and daughters, husbands and wives, mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, teammates, and dear friends whose lives were cut short in service to this nation. It is a day to honor not only their sacrifice, but the families forever changed by their absence.
For those of us privileged to serve the military and veteran community, Memorial Day carries a deeply personal weight. Sacrifice is not an abstract concept within this community, but a lived reality woven into the fabric of military service across generations. From battlefields long past to the conflicts of our modern era, brave Americans have carried extraordinary burdens in defense of our nation, often in silence and far from public view.
That reality makes Memorial Day especially profound, not only as a day of remembrance for those we have lost, but as a solemn call to reflect on the values they defended and the responsibility we all share to honor their sacrifice through how we live, serve, and remember.
As we gather with family and friends this Memorial Day, may we pause to reflect on the profound cost of the freedoms we enjoy. May we remember those who gave everything so that others might live free. And may we honor their legacy not only in remembrance, but by standing united as a nation, bound in gratitude for their sacrifice and in shared commitment to the ideals for which they gave their lives.

To our Gold Star families and all those carrying loss that never fully fades, please know that today, and always, we remember with you.
We honor the fallen.
We hold close the families who carry their legacy.
And we recommit ourselves to being worthy of their sacrifice.
