Just weeks ago we shared how South Korean officials found in SHEIN products toxic substances linked with obesity, heart disease, cancer, and fertility disruptions. A recent user review of Good On You’s app reminded us just how real the problems of fast fashion brands like SHEIN, Temu, Zara, H&M, and Boohoo are 😳
Heavy metal poisoning may sound far fetched but it’s an ongoing problem: polyester is made with antimony trioxide, a suspected carcinogen; plastics used for durability in clothing contain phthalates, which can interfere with your hormones; the process of tanning leather includes chromium VI, a heavy metal that is hemotoxic, genotoxic, and carcinogenic—and the most common pollutant found in groundwaters ☢️
These toxic materials don’t exist in a vacuum as they impact workers and the environment, and as communities face ongoing exposure to these substances. Brands aren’t doing enough either as they enable short and long-term danger. “When it comes to chemicals, it is possibly one of the most greenwashed issues,” Good On You head of ratings explains. “For some brands, it is done out of naivety, whilst with others it is more malicious.”
What can you do about this? Make more informed decisions about what you buy by using Good On You 💫 Our ratings cover how a brand impacts labour, the environment, and animals which helps you make more informed decisions about what brands you support—and the actions that these brands are taking.
Here’s to making more informed choices! Our lives and our future depend on it 💗
