JJ Holmes is a disability advocacy legend in Florida. Lawmakers know him well; he’s been speaking out at local delegations and meeting with lawmakers in Tallahassee for years. In 2024, thanks in large part to JJ’s persistence, the Florida legislature passed a bill increasing funding for the iBudget waiver program. JJ was honored on the senate floor with a standing ovation as the bill was passed. It was a special moment, not because it marked the end of his mission, but because it fueled his commitment to keep speaking out and pushing for a system that serves everyone.

JJ’s impact in Florida didn’t happen by accident. It’s the product of his unshakable persistence to keep showing up, paired with the financial support of people who believe in the power of his story and the value of sharing it face-to-face.

That’s why we’ve launched Lift a Voice— a campaign to fund the efforts of courageous advocates like JJ. With your support advocates have the opportunity meet face-to-face with the lawmakers who have the power to shape our systems. Because our personal stories can do what statistics simply can’t. As JJ puts it “You don’t have to be perfect to be powerful. You just need a story…and the right people backing you up.”

Asylum seekers, refugees, and survivors of s*x trafficking are among the estimated 177,00 lawful immigrants losing Medicaid coverage in the coming months. The impact, however, is not restricted to those losing coverage. Studies show that when the number of uninsured residents goes up, the cost to taxpayers rises as well. Stripping people of basic coverage and care harms us all.
