Mholo from Cape Town! Our research fellow, Grace Smith, successfully presented her International Communications Association conference presentation: “Genre-based pedagogy: Journalism as a framework for emerging traditions in TESOL education.” Our fellows have worked hard to contextualize our curriculum within genre-based pedagogy and TESOL. Based on our unique values-centered approach, our fellows propose a new tradition within this pedagogy: “Values-Centered Genre Pedagogy.” Keep your eyes peeled for some novel TESOL scholarship, coming to a journal near you!

Take a look at our new cohorts’ FIRST magazines!
They explore a diverse range of topics range from student features to Gen-Z’s influence on politics and cultural insights to past and present Nepali society. Many of these girls are using technology for the first time to create their publications and as they continue, they will develop journalistic skills such as finding and citing sources, interviewing, and photographing to enhance their articles.

This week, our current participants from Bethari visited two schools in Lumbini to recruit new students for Girl Reports. They spoke with school principals, teachers, and students alike on the value of the program and their personal experience. Their ability to do this with visible confidence (and in English) is a testament to the hard work they've put in since they started the program. We are so very proud of them.

Special thanks to the administrators and teachers at all of our partner schools for encouraging student participation and collaborating with us to implement this program. We are especially excited to be back at Karuna Girls School this year where it all started, and we look forward to welcoming new girls to the program across all four partner schools next month!

Our girls are producing their first set of articles! With each magazine, they improve their writing, and as they run through our curriculum, they add new journalistic elements to their work. They also take on more of the responsibilities involved in putting it all together as they go through the process of publishing.

For this first issue, our students focused on selecting a topic that was interesting to them and writing in their own voice. Going forward, they'll begin practicing outlines for more complex articles, adhearing to deadlines, and creating layouts.
