Peace Plans, War Strategies and a Changing Middle East

Recorded on August 17, 2026: Mike and Laureen look at a Middle East in flux, beginning with the latest U.S.-backed peace proposal for Gaza and the growing obstacles to getting a deal across the finish line. They examine whether there is a realistic path forward when both sides remain unwilling to make the concessions the other considers essential. With the current Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) expiring the same day as the recording, they ask whether the United States is preparing a new round of economic sanctions against Iran—and whether sanctions would actually change Iran's behavior. They also consider how the upcoming U.S. midterm elections could influence the administration's strategy and willingness to continue the conflict.
Israel is entering a critical election season of their own. Following the latest Likud primary, the country is heading toward its October 27 general election, which could determine Benjamin Netanyahu's political future and reshape Israel's approach to both Gaza and Iran.

The hosts note the formation of a new regional development is also taking shape: the defense agreement between Turkey, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia that some are calling a “Muslim NATO.” What does this emerging military partnership mean for Iran, Israel, the United States and the broader balance of power in the Middle East?

Club J Afterschool is a program for elementary education students of the Tampa Jewish Community Centers & Federation.

The program is offered at the Shanna & Bryan Glazer JCC. Our program provides children from kindergarten through 5th grades an opportunity to have fun, learn new skills and to grow and develop in positive ways.
