Think about your life as a book, packed with stories, memories, the many life lessons you have learnt, and your plans for the future. This action makes everyone see you only for your cover and nothing else. You may be asking yourself, who is this culprit that took my story? Well, the answer is false perception. Someone looked at you and, based off your features, decided that your story was just li
ke someone else’s. Therefore, it was not worth telling or showing to people. Stereotyping and false perceptions lead to the stories of millions of people being masked just because of the color of their skin, sexual orientation, or ethnic background. Although these are major issues with stereotyping, another matter has arisen in the university environment. Students have begun to generalize about their classmates based on their field of study. For instance, a person in the engineering college may be viewed as a nerd, or to be from an Asian ethnicity. Just think about a random student at a College of Nursing, whom do you see? More than likely you saw a female of some sort. False perceptions of this type, often times, can be just as harmful as racism or sexism. They take these people’s stories away. Taking away their right to be judged on their own character and personality. They are labeled and filed into a certain cabinet, hidden from the world. It was the aim of this group to try and eliminate some of these false perception by using art to give these lost books a chance to be read. The group took pictures of peoples’ faces from some stereotyped colleges, and gave them a chance to show their personality to the world. They were asked to make a face of confidence, or goofy face, in order for their personality to come through. These pictures will hopefully show students that everyone is unique. We all have a right to be seen. Please “Like” this group to help give this cause some support. Special thanks goes to Abraao Chuang, Amit Gulati, and Ajay Gulati. Without your help this project would have never been completed.
