Milton has maintained its intensity overnight and is still a CAT 5 hurricane.
All models indicate vertical wind shear will increase over the hurricane later today causing Milton to weaken, but this will not matter much. Milton will make landfall as a very dangerous hurricane. There will be major wind damage where the core of the hurricane moves on shore and record storm surge south of the landfall point. In my almost 35 year career here I hoped that I never had to type this, but it is increasingly obvious that this will be a life changing hurricane for many. All of our reliable models agree on a landfall point somewhere near to 50 or so miles south of Tampa Bay. The core of the hurricane will move across the state tonight bringing damaging winds all the way to the east coast. We will use radar and satellite fixes all day to narrow down the point of landfall.
I am going to say this again. This is a very serious situation and you should closely follow orders from their local emergency management officials. IF TOLD TO EVACUATE THEN EVACUATE! Your storm preparations need to be rushed to completion. Milton has the potential to be one of the most destructive hurricanes on record for portions of our area.
I will post here as much as I can today - Please follow our coverage on FOX 13 News - Tampa Bay, If you lose power you can watch us via the FOX local app.
