Memphis Inner City Rugby

Memphis Inner City Rugby since 2012 MICR was founded by two Memphis educators in 2012 who wanted to make an impact outside of the classroom walls.

Instead of starting an organization- Shane Young and Devin O’Brien simply launched rugby programs in the neighborhoods and schools where they taught. The two teams- Kingsbury Falcons & Power Center Knights- paved the way for what would become an evolved impact model for even more schools and students through the 901. In 2015, MICR's first girls programs were founded and in 2018, we expanded to rea

ch middle and elementary students. Entering it's 9th year, MICR now serves approximately 300 student-athletes throughout Memphis with a robust alumni support program designed to increase opportunity and persistence rates for our college students. MICR scholars not only receive coaching in rugby. MICR's programming includes:

-Tutoring/Academic tracking
-ACT/SAT Prep
-College readiness counseling
-Yoga
-Travel
-All-Star camps
-Alternative fitness experiences
-Mentoring

College can be overwhelming. For many students, it means a new environment, new expectations, and the pressure of figuring everything out on their own, often without anyone at home who has been through it before. Too many students are left to navigate that storm alone. ⛈️

At MICR, they don’t have to. Through our Alumni Support Program, students have someone to call, someone who checks in, listens, and helps them keep going when things get hard. One student shared that their mentor was “kind of like a mom, making sure I was okay,” and that kind of support matters more than people realize. Because success in college isn’t just about academics, it’s about having the support to stay.

The Grand Opening for the MICR Rugby Complex is just over a month away and happening on Friday, June 26th ⭐️ The Grand Opening will include a ribbon cutting taking place at 11:00 am, and a community day celebration from 12:00 pm until 4:00 pm!

MICR’s home field will be more than a field - it will be a space built for connection, growth, and long-term impact. We’re so excited to celebrate with a casual, high-energy community event with family, students, and supporters! The event will include touch rugby, food, and activities to celebrate 🎉

The JULS EOY celebration consisted of hugging trees & touching grass at Shelby Forest!! Team leaders celebrated a year of leadership sessions with a hike - which included minimal plant identification 🌱- lunch, kayaking, and of course throwing around a rugby ball. We couldn’t ask for a better way to wrap up the year ⭐️

Maybe next year we’ll include a kayaking race…who’s gonna win?
