The Tampa Bay Letterboard Community is delighted to invite you to a special Space Adventure morning with veteran NASA Astronaut, Artist, and Author Nicole Stott.

Nicole flew two spaceflights and spent 104 days in space as a crewmember on both the International Space Station and the Space Shuttle. She was also the first person to paint Earth in watercolor from space — and now shares her story and her message about caring for our home planet with audiences around the world.

Come hear about what it’s really like to walk in space, live on the ISS, and fly the Space Shuttle.

Early on with Gabbi, I gave her a label. Defiant.

She was always set on doing things her way, getting her way, and I had a word for that. I even went looking for evidence and found studies linking autism and oppositional defiance.

There. Confirmed. 💔

But that label kept me in the Red Zone. The more I watched for defiance, the more I saw it.

Until the day I started looking for the positives in Gabbi’s behavior as well as her traits, and what had been true the whole time came into focus.

Gabbi wasn’t defiant. Gabbi is persistent. She knows what she wants. And that very trait, the one I had labeled the heaviest, is the one that has served her most on her journey.

So today I want to leave you with the realization that shifted everything in our home:

What if my child’s hardest trait is also their gift?

Not eventually. Not someday. Right now.

✨ Deep focus is not rigidity. It is the foundation of mastery.

✨ Detailed and observant is not anxious. It is the foundation of insight.

✨ Sensitivity is not fragility. It is the foundation of empathy.

✨ A rich inner world is not "living in their own world." It is the foundation of imagination.

There is a famous study called the Pygmalion Effect. Teachers were told certain children (chosen at random) were on the verge of an intellectual bloom that year. By year’s end, those children had grown more than their peers. The only thing that had changed was how the adults saw them.

I have lived this with Gabbi, twice, in two different schools. One labeled her hard to manage. One saw her as a gift. The difference was night and day, and it was the adults who changed, not Gabbi.

The little girl I once called defiant? She now connects with people in a way I have never seen anyone do. She has a light, and the people who get to see it never forget. 💚

So look at your child today and ask one quieter question:

What is right that I have been missing?

The trait you thought was the problem may be holding the gift you have been waiting for them to grow into.

Which Zone is my home in today?

🔴 Red Zone is the home that runs on adrenaline. Voices rise quickly. Small things become big things. Everyone is reacting to everyone else. You can feel it in your shoulders before you have even taken a sip of coffee. The emotions here are heavy. Frustration, fear, resentment, overwhelm.

🟡 Yellow Zone is a good landing place. The emotions are moderate. Things are pretty okay. You might feel slightly off, or you might feel slightly hopeful. You are not in distress, and you are not in joy. You are steady. And steady is enough to build from.

🟢 Green Zone is where hope lives. You feel optimistic about your family. You can imagine good things and actually believe them. From Green you can keep climbing into eagerness, joy, appreciation, real positive expectation for what is coming for you and your child. Green Zone is not about perfection. It is about possibility.

Here is the part I really want you to hear.

You do not have to fix your child to move your home up the Zones. You do not have to wait for things to get easier. You do not have to outsmart a meltdown or get ahead of every hard moment.

You only have to begin noticing.

Because emotional awareness is the first lever. When you can name where you are, you can choose where you go next.

🔴 When your home is in Red, you are not failing, you are receiving information.

🟡 When your home is in Yellow, you are already on the way. Yellow is the soft middle that lets you breathe and reach for one notch higher.

🟢 When your home is in Green, you are not lucky, you are practiced, and from there you keep climbing.

Your child's nervous system reads yours before they hear your words. You are the thermostat in your home, not the thermometer.

So tomorrow morning, before the first ask of the day, take one quiet breath and check in.

Which Zone is my home in today?

That tiny question is where the shift begins.

Fifteen years ago, I would walk into my own home after work and feel my chest tighten.

That was the Red Zone. And I lived there.

Not because I didn’t love my daughter. I loved her ferociously. But love, it turns out, doesn’t regulate your nervous system. Love doesn’t give you tools. Love alone is not a strategy.

I was doing everything I could… and still felt like I was drowning.

What changed everything wasn’t another therapy or another plan for my child. It was the moment I realized I had to come into alignment with myself and who I really am before I could lead her anywhere good.

That is the shift. That is what From Survival to Alignment teaches.

Words cannot begin to capture the depth of joy, love, and connection that filled every moment of this past weekend at Gabbi’s Dream Camp. More than 200 family members traveling from 6 states and 3 different countries came together, not just to gather, but to truly be with one another. What unfolded was something far greater than an event; it was a living, breathing community built on understanding, compassion, and shared experience.

There is something incredibly powerful about being surrounded by people who “get it” without explanation. In that space, walls come down. Stories are shared more openly. Laughter comes easier. And even the hard moments feel lighter because no one is carrying them alone. This weekend created that space. A safe, welcoming place where families could celebrate their victories, speak honestly about their challenges, and feel seen, heard, and supported in ways that are often hard to find in everyday life.

Old friendships were rekindled like no time had passed at all, while new connections were formed that already feel lasting and meaningful. Children and young adults played freely, parents connected deeply, and everywhere you looked there were moments of pure, unfiltered joyhugs that lingered a little longer, conversations that mattered, and smiles that came from the heart.
