For eight years at Artistas Cafe, I watched talented young adults on the autism spectrum work hard to hide who they were. 💚

They did not want anyone to know they had autism. Many had learned that saying it out loud could cost them something.

But people cannot ask for what they need if it does not feel safe to say who they are.

Every person has a Zone of Brilliance, a place where they are fully themselves, using their gifts, and doing their best work. Leaders have more power than they realize to help people get there.

That is what I will be teaching on October 15 in Tampa with the Nonprofit Leadership Center of Tampa Bay: Creating a Neuro-Ready Organization.

40% of leaders say their mental health has declined since stepping into the role.

We ask leaders to carry the vision, the pressure, and the people. We rarely ask who is carrying them.

Here's what the research says:

🌱 A 2024 study in Human Resource Management, fittingly titled "Put your own oxygen mask on first," found that leaders who practice intentional self-care are far better equipped to support the wellbeing of the people they lead.

🌱 A recent study of health system employees linked stronger leadership to 31% lower odds of anxiety and 47% lower odds of combined depression and anxiety among staff.

Your wellbeing is not separate from your effectiveness. It is the foundation of it.

When you lead from survival mode, your team feels it. When you lead from the Green Zone, calm, clear, and connected, they feel that too.

For years, we could not hear what our daughter knew.

Gabbi was diagnosed with autism at four. Later we learned she also has Apraxia, a condition where the brain struggles to plan and send the correct instructions to the body. Her mind was full. Her mouth could not say it. About 30% of those with
Autism are also diagnosed with Apraxia.

The world often assumes that not speaking means not thinking. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Seven years ago, Gabbi began using Spell to Communicate (S2C), spelling on a letter board, one letter at a time. Twenty six letters gave us our daughter’s voice. We finally knew what she knows, what she wants, and how she feels. And the brilliance inside her took our breath away. 💚

Here is what she and her Speller friends have taught me: we judge competence by how people look or what they do not say. And because of that, many children and adults never get the chance to learn, to grow, or to live life on purpose.

Gabbi’s answer is simple: presume competence.

When we presume someone can learn and grow, we take the time to teach them.
When we presume competence, we believe in a path for their future, and they get the chance to create the life they desire.
