Vision Zero Hillsborough

Vision Zero Hillsborough A Vision Zero policy establishes a goal of reducing traffic fatalities and serious injuries to zero. Several U.S. cities have adopted Vision Zero.

Hillsborough County has adopted a “Vision Zero” goal resolution by the Tampa City Council, Hillsborough County Commission, Temple Terrace City Council, and by the School Board of Hillsborough County. This effort is being led by the Hillsborough Transportation Planning Organization (TPO). Vision Zero is an approach to road safety that began in Sweden and has been implemented in that country since 1

997. At the core of the worldwide Vision Zero movement is the belief that death and injury on city streets is preventable – in other words, that these aren’t “accidents,” but the result of poor behaviors combined with unforgiving roadway designs. The TPO Policy Committee, along with many partners, are in the process of developing a Vision Zero Action Plan in 2016 and 2017. Residents, businesspeople, health professionals, representatives of the media, law enforcement, schools, local governments, and others are invited to collaborate on the steps needed to take traffic safety to the next level in our community.

During the two weeks after we change our clocks back from daylight saving time, deer-vehicle collisions reach their annual peak. When we “fall back,” we create one more hour of high-danger driving. That afternoon hour of increased darkness results in more cars on the road when more wildlife roam. Stay safe by slowing down at dawn and dusk, using high beams when there’s no oncoming traffic, and always staying alert to movement along the side of the road.

When wildlife and vehicles collide, nobody wins. We can save lives and reduce roadside accidents year round by building more wildlife crossings across the country. Wildlife Crossings Save Lives. https://environmentamerica.org/articles/daylight-savings-time-and-deer-collisions/

It’s a crash not an accident 💥

When we call traffic crashes “accidents,” we imply they’re unavoidable — and stop asking why they happen.

Words matter.

🚌🚸 It’s National School Bus Safety Week!

Every school day, around 25 million children ride the bus in the US and every one of them deserves to get to and from school safely (Source: National Safety Council).

At Best Foot Forward, we’re reminding drivers:
✅ Stop when the bus stop-arm is out
✅ Watch for children walking and biking near bus stops
✅ Slow down in school zones and neighborhoods

💛 A few extra seconds of caution behind the wheel can make all the difference for a child’s safety.

As the region's first and only Level I Trauma Center, we see the serious impact of e-bike crashes every day. With injuries on the rise, especially among kids ages 12–15, we want parents to know the risks and the steps they can take to keep their children safe. Helmets, supervision and safety education can make all the difference. 🚲
