Thank you to Tampa General Hospital and our amazing AFSP Tampa Bay volunteers for an amazing day yesterday! We brought a modified version of our Hope Starts Here Su***de Prevention Event to some TGH staff. We shared our resources, Talk Saved Lives: An Introduction to Su***de Prevention, and Caring Communities: Guidance for Supporting Survivors of Su***de Loss. Several team members also got trained to present our programs! We couldn’t have done this without our amazing volunteers. Thank you all!

(Virtual Spanish Language Survivor Day Event)

(This program will take place entirely in Spanish.)

Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Su***de Prevention is AFSP’s 60-minute flagship su***de prevention education program that covers the scope of this leading cause of death, what the research has found to be the warning signs and risk factors of su***de, and the strategies that prevent it.

Topics covered include:

Scope of the Problem: The latest data on su***de in the U.S.

Research: Information from research on what causes people to consider su***de, how certain communities are impacted by su***de differently, as well as contributors to su***de risk

Prevention: An understanding of the protective factors that lower su***de risk, and strategies for managing mental health and being proactive about self-care

What You Can Do: Guidance on warning signs and behaviors to look for, how to start a conversation with someone you are concerned about, and ways to seek and offer support and crisis resources for yourself or others.

After losing his father to su***de, Steve believed that su***de prevention efforts and the support of those who have lost someone to su***de should be national priorities.

Steve was first introduced to AFSP through his local Walk.

"From the very first event, the community walks have always been a place to share difficult stories with others, broaden public awareness and education, and find a true sense of hope."

Now, Steve is a National Board Member dedicated to fighting this leading cause of death.

Being seen and supported for who you are isn't a luxury — it's lifesaving. 🌈

Data continues to show that LGBTQ+ youth face disproportionate mental health risks compared to their peers. Creating affirming spaces and expanding access to tailored care isn't just important, it’s critical work we can do together to support the community.
