As hurricane Milton approaches the Tampa Bay area we all are anticipating another round of devastation to hit our community. What a blessing we were given to receive supplies and help prepare so soon after hurricane Helene.

After coordinating with Kroger Deliveries and Feeding Tampa Bay, a delivery of fresh produce, non-perishable food, shelf stable milk and water was handed out to hundreds of families on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024. This was a pre-scheduled open community event for Hillsborough County families to interact with first responders in a positive fashion was held. It included food, drink, family entertainment at no cost to Hillsborough County residents.

This Saturday, Oct. 5, there is going to be an open community event for Hillsborough County families to interact with first responders in a positive fashion. It will include free food, drink, and family entertainment for Hillsborough County residents.

Given the devastation that many in our community have experienced after hurricane Helene we have decided to expand this outreach. The firefighters charities is currently communicating with emergency management and other agencies to pivot this to a hurricane recovery as well. We would like this to become a one stop shop for resources that may be helpful for people who were affected by the storm.

URGENT NOTE: Vendors or people interested in providing financial support to help our local community. We have had SCAM artists attempting to illicit money through Cash app. Please use the contact on the flyer only. HCFF CHARITIES ONLY ACCEPTS PAYMENTS VIA CHECK.

Waffle House Index. Sometimes non-traditional indicators are providers of valuable information. A former FEMA chief used the status of the breakfast chain’s locations as an indicator for how quickly a place is likely to spring back after a hurricane. Waffle House locations are generally open round the clock, and under the Waffle House index, a closed breakfast spot is not a good thing.

▪ Green: Waffle House is serving a full menu and electricity is on.
▪ Yellow: a limited menu, implying low food supplies and possibly the necessity of using generators.
▪ Red: Waffle House has closed.

There are 15 locations in Hurricane Ian’s path on the SW coast of Florida and currently only one is closed. The “indicator” is used to assess the extent of the damage after a storm so this closing is likely due to labor shortages or employee safety concerns.

“Is the Waffle House open as Hurricane Ian threatens Florida? If not, that could be bad” - Miami Herald article
