Lighthouse for the Blind & Low Vision's Rehabilitation Engineering Program Opens Doors Through Technology

Lighthouse for the Blind & Low Vision, also known as Tampa Lighthouse for the Blind, offers a Rehabilitation Engineering program that empowers participants through customized assistive technology solutions designed to support education, employment, and independence. This program’s comprehensive hands-on approach goes beyond simply recommending technology. Assistive Technology Specialists analyze job tasks and workplace environments, develop customized accommodation plans, install and modify equipment on-site, and provide individualized training to ensure successful adoption. With services available throughout Florida and nationally, this unique program's expertise spans screen readers, magnification software, speech access tools, scanners, mobile technology, and workplace adaptations. Combining assessment, implementation, and training, Lighthouse helps people who are blind or visually impaired succeed in school and on the job with greater confidence, productivity, and independence. Did you know we provide free services for infants and young children? Our Early Intervention program is designed to help them develop the essential skills needed for independence and school readiness. We provide home-based instruction across Hillsborough, Polk, and Hardee counties and focus on physical, environmental, mental, and social skill development, ensuring every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential. October is Blindness Awareness Month, an opportunity to bring attention to the experiences of blind or low vision individuals.

At Lighthouse, we work every day providing those of all ages free classes, skills and tools to help ensure that vision loss does not mean a loss of independence.

This month, we hope you’ll take some time to learn more about blindness and low vision, about the services we provide, and about the people we are so grateful to serve.

As the busy fall sports season is underway, it's important to remember the importance of protecting ones eyes while participating in athletic events. September is Sports Eye Safety Month and there are thousands of sports related eye injuries every year. Please remember to wear your protective sports gear and if you do suffer an injury, make an appointment with your doctor.

Thank you to the Gibney Foundation, Florida's Youth at Heart, Legacy Welding and 100 Women of Westshore for providing the funds for our new computer lab for our teens. During their first night in the lab, they began learning the keyboard with the help of the Talking Typer program. The computers are equipped with speech and magnification tools. Our goal is that when the teens graduate and leave our program they will have the needed skills for college or employment. We are so grateful for the generosity and so proud of our teens who are working hard toward their goals.

Special thanks to the GiveWell Community Foundation! Because of your generosity, our children ages 6-14 are learning to use their new iPads. They are learning to navigate the iPad to use its educational applications with the built in accessibility features of speech and magnification. Tools like this make such a difference in the lives of blind and low vision individuals. We appreciate your support!

We are so grateful to Florida's Youth At Heart (FYAH) for their generous donation to our Transition Program, and to Legacy Welding llc. for generously matching the donation.

These funds will go toward our Transition Program Technology lab, which provides blind and low vision teens with tools and technology that support skills development and independence that helps prepare them for their futures.

We were so happy to have our Tampa Transition teens attend the FYAH banquet this past weekend, where they were presented with both checks. Thank you for these generous donations that make such an impact!
