There are a lot of ways to work with young people. This one asks you to stay.

Friends of the Children–Tampa Bay is looking for a Professional Mentor, or “Friend,” who wants to build something that takes time: a real, lasting relationship with a young person.

You’ll be there for the big moments, the ordinary days, the setbacks, the wins, and everything in between.

You’ll learn what makes them tick. Help them discover their strengths. Encourage their interests. Build life skills. And, most importantly, keep showing up.

Our Friends make a 12+ year commitment to walk alongside the same young person as they grow.

So we’re looking for someone who believes in young people, builds trust naturally, adapts when things don’t go as planned, and understands that consistency can mean more than having all the answers.

The Big Question

Why does one caring adult make such a difference in a child's life?

A backpack might seem like a small thing.

But imagine being a child and knowing someone thought about you before you even walked through those school doors.

That's what our Friends are doing this summer.

Making sure their kids are ready. Showing up. Thinking ahead. Being there.

It's the kind of thing that can seem small from the outside.

But to a child, it can say a lot:

Someone's got my back.

And sometimes, that's what a child needs to face what's next.

Greg, one of our Friends, took two of our youth out for a day of fishing, hoping they'd spend a few hours outdoors and maybe reel in a few fish.
The fish had other plans 😂.

After hours of trying, they ended the day with exactly one crab.
You'd think that would make the trip a disappointment, but judging by the smiles, the jokes, and the stories they came back with, no one seemed to mind.
Some of the best moments happened while they were simply waiting for a bite, laughing together, and enjoying a day away from their usual routines.

That's what being a Friend looks like. It's showing up consistently and making time for moments that help a child feel connected.
Years from now, they probably won't remember how many fish they caught. There's a good chance they'll remember the day they caught one crab and had someone there to share it with.

“What does this child need right now?”

Sometimes it’s academic support.
Sometimes it’s encouragement.
Sometimes it’s simply knowing someone will show up.

Maybe it was a teacher.

You probably don't remember every conversation you had with them.
