We will be starting new classes in August. If you are interested in joining us, please let me know. We would love to have you. All ages are welcome but if you are younger than 15 an adult must accompany you! But the minimum age is 12.

I always try to make my repairs and upgrades into a class for whoever happens to be currently attending my classes.

I finally found a starter manufacturer that would build a starter that would fit my engine. This starter is 4 lbs heavier but turns the engine 200 rpm faster allowing it to have a stronger spark. This did solve the starting issue. Now if we travel to another location we should have no trouble getting home due to a no start situation!
Had a recurring problem. The fl**ge that mounts the starter to the the engine kept cracking so I had it welded to the starter. We now begin the endurance test to see if that cured the problem!

In order to make easier repairs and better inspections, I decided the nose cone should be removable. This turned into quite the project. The nosecone can now be removed in 5 min and working forward of the front landing gear and dash is now a breeze!
I found the wiring needed to be re-done, the front wheel pant needed to be lowered, the battery box had to be replaced and the wind screen removed and replaced in order to repaint the cone.

The radiator broke and had to be replaced so I took this oportunity to change the system and put the radiator in the rear at the prop for better cooling. This opened up lots of design and trouble shooting we can all learn from!

My friend Mike and I put on a second radiator to add in the cooling of the system. The new radiator is leaking somewhere so now I have to do a pressure test to find the leak.
This project opens up a lot of interesting issues to check. Weight and balance, engine performance, fuel burn, cylinder head and coolant temperatures at different RPM without thermostat, clearance and vibration issues!

Still experimenting on the cooling system.

I found that the coolant input manifold has 3 different sized outlets to the cylinders. The cylinder closest to the input hose has a hole 1/2" the middle cylinder hole is 23/64" and the last cylinder hole is 5/16". " picture 1 "

I have made all three hole 23/64 to give equal flow to all three and need to test this to see if there are any adverse reactions like uneven cooling. " Picture 2 "

I was told the difference was because at the end of the manifold at cylinder 3 there is a bleed fitting to get air out of the system. That fitting goes back to the radiator before going through the heads. It is supposed to keep the cylinders from getting air trapped in them during coolant circulation.

The second thing I am going to do is restrict the 3/8" bypass hose where the temp sender is located to give most of the coolant flow to the radiator but still leave enough to operate the sender and circulate during warmup by inserting this restrictor with 3/16" hole. Restrictor " picture 4 "

This year I was not able to go to the Planes Trains & Automobiles event in Plant City with my airplane. It has been a fun event to participate in and help get the public to know about what I do and to promote Mission Flight United. I will try again next year!
