Hurricane Milton Updates!
POST-MILTON UPDATE #2: Our maintenance teams and school administrators have worked tirelessly over the past two days to assess the damage at all of our school sites.
Due to significant flooding, large, uprooted trees blocking access, and widespread power outages at 172 of our schools, our cleanup efforts will need to continue. For this reason, district officials have decided that schools and district offices will remain closed on Monday, October 14. An update will be sent out by noon on Monday regarding our reopening status for the remainder of the week.
Our decision to reopen schools will depend on how quickly power can be restored at our sites, the conditions of our school facilities, the number of district and school staff without power or with significant damage in their homes, and the condition of roadways and traffic signals in our community. Additionally, three of our schools are still active storm shelters.
We understand these extended closures raise concerns regarding the loss of instructional time and makeup days. We are in contact with the Florida Department of Education on our status. At this time, our priority is safely reopening our schools, and we will communicate any decisions about makeup time at a later date.
Please visit our website, hillsboroughschools.org, for resources for you and your family, if needed. Keep checking back as we will update it as more information from the county or state becomes available.
Thank you for your continued flexibility. Please stay safe!
