🌍 Food for Thought on Earth Day 🌱

Have you ever heard of Meatless Mondays? It's a simple way to make a BIG impact: skip eating meat one day a week—typically Monday (or any day you choose)—and eat plant-based meals on that day.

Skipping meat just one day a week helps reduce your carbon footprint, conserve water, and protect wildlife habitats. It’s a small step that adds up to meaningful change for our planet!

💧 Each meatless meal saves roughly 133 gallons of water
🌫 30% of human related greenhouse gas emissions are from the food system
🐮 Help protect animals and their homes

Nacho was living outdoors but wasn't feral. As you may recall, he spent time with a temporary foster while he was neutered, vaccinated, and fully vetted. It quickly became clear that Nacho has an "extra spicy” personality, so he is now with an experienced foster who specializes in working with cats that need extra patience.

Because Nacho likely spent most of his life outdoors, adjusting to indoor living has been a big transition. While he may not love it yet, indoor life keeps cats safe from cars, predators, and disease—and it also helps protect birds and other wildlife. Behavior changes after neuter surgery can take time, especially for adult males, so we’re giving Nacho the space and patience he needs.

For now, Nacho is not available for adoption, and he may never be. If he eventually becomes a good candidate for adoption, we’ll let everyone know. If not, he’ll remain right where he is—safe with his foster and her other cats, with a full belly and lots of love for the rest of his life.

Retire the myth that seeing a wild animal during the daytime means there's something wrong with them.

Many animals adjust their schedules based on food availability, weather, or avoiding predators—so daytime activity is NOT unusual.

Though daytime activity alone isn’t a red flag, there are times when wildlife may need help. Watch for these warning signs :

-> Disorientation or unsteady movement (stumbling, circling, unable to walk properly)
-> Unusual aggression or lack of fear toward people or pets
-> Visible injuries (bleeding, limping, dragging limbs)
-> Severe lethargy (not moving when approached)
-> Repeated vocal distress or signs of suffering
-> Young animals alone for LONG PERIODS (especially if crying or in danger)

If the situation meets one or more of those criteria, we recommend using the Animal Help Now app to find help (it's free to download on your phone). It's also available on our website under the Find Wildlife Rehab tab.

And opossums? They're a helpful neighbor! They eat insects, rodents, and even ticks! They’re typically shy, slow-moving, and non-aggressive. Opossums rarely—almost never—carry rabies, thanks to their low body temperature, which makes it difficult for the virus to survive.

This case struck a nerve far beyond Wyoming—and for good reason. The level of cruelty involved was not only heartbreaking, but a stark reminder of why animal welfare work matters everywhere, not just in our own backyard.

As a Florida-based rescue, some may wonder why we chose to follow and speak out on a case so far from home. When an act is especially egregious, staying silent contributes to a culture where these actions are minimized or overlooked. By paying attention, by sharing, and by adding our voices, we help send a clear message—animal abuse is never acceptable, anywhere.

Cases like this also highlight the importance of stronger protections, accountability, and public awareness. Every time people come together in outrage and advocacy, it creates pressure for change.

We are grateful to those who brought attention to this case and to everyone who continues to stand up for animals who cannot speak for themselves.

"We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim." - Elie Wiesel

The Sublette County judge has accepted Cody Roberts’ plea agreement, noting that “the charge in this case is disturbing.” While the full list of requirements is not exhaustive, the primary penalties and conditions have been outlined. This marks a catalyst moment and a step in the right direction.🐾🐺🐾🐺

On Easter, we celebrate renewal and new beginnings. 🦋🌼
For wildlife, renewal starts with the right plants and healthy habitats. Plant native and help create a landscape where butterflies—and so many other animals—can thrive.

Nacho Update: Nacho has been in 2 foster homes with conflicting reports. The first foster (who took him in temporarily to get him off the streets and had him about a week) reported he was friendly, using the litterbox, and a candidate for adoption. However, this person could not commit to fostering him long term.

He was put in another foster home and received vet care (which went well: he was neutered, FIV Negative, dewormed, vaccines, and more). However, in that home it was reported that he was behaving more like a feral cat.

We weren't giving up on Nacho. 🧡

We put him in a home with a very experienced cat foster where he will be assessed. For now, we don't know if he's a candidate for adoption. But he's in a place where he's safe, vetted, and - most importantly given the weather ❄️🌬️we're experiencing - indoors.

We will continue to give updates. 😻
