As you watch the Super Bowl today, consider a few realities that rarely make it into the broadcast.

According to the most recent AFCARS data, 328,947 children in the United States are currently in foster care.
That is enough children to fill the five largest NFL stadiums.

And approximately every 96 seconds — about the length of a commercial break — another child enters foster care. Over the course of a single game, that adds up to around 150 children.
It is easy to feel overwhelmed by numbers like these. The reality is, you do not have to become a foster parent to make an impact, even though safe and supportive homes are urgently needed.

Something as simple as following, sharing, or talking about this issue helps raise awareness and keeps these children from being invisible.

Hillsborough County Public Schools senior Dejaverie Brown of Hillsborough High School was identified in the media as the student leader of a protest involving about 60 classmates. She stood in her voice and said, “We are slowly and surely making a difference in this world.”

Now comes the real question.
Knowing the current political climate in Florida, what is being put in place right now to support this Black student when backlash hits campus Monday morning?

Who is ensuring her physical and emotional safety at school?

Who is monitoring and addressing harassment from peers or adults?

Who is making sure she is not targeted through discipline or academic consequences?

Florida friends, action is needed. There is a push to let certain charter schools use space inside public schools at no cost, and a Senate bill that would roll back the most harmful parts of the Schools of Hope law is currently stuck in committee.

You can help move it forward. Use the link to email your legislators and ask that the Senate bill be given a fair hearing. It only takes a minute, and your voice matters.
