The Premier Players Sports Foundation hosted its first Kickball Challenge last week, which was a total blast! Former MLB player and Executive Director Kenny Kelly (rockin' the white shirt) led his fierce squad in the Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister jerseys. At the same time, Regina Watson (far left), Program Director for Hillsborough County at Camelot Independent Living Services, rallied her dynamic crew in their bold Mobley Homes jerseys. Laughter echoed, competition was fierce, and the vibes were unbeatable. Every player left a winner, walking away with gift cards courtesy of the Dick’s Sporting Goods Sports Matter grant. A huge shoutout to everyone who made it unforgettable!

Washington Commanders' rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels has been pivotal on the field and active off it, recently partnering with Raising Canes restaurant to give away 100 bikes to local kids. The Commanders are enjoying their best start since 1992.

I love learning about players' excellent work to help others off the field. The Mississippi State Bulldogs nominate Nick Barr-Mira for the Freddie Solomon Community Spirit Award. Nick is a senior kicker with a 3.36 GPA. He graduated from UCLA in psychology and is pursuing a master's in workforce education leadership at Mississippi State.

Since joining Mississippi State in 2023, Nick has actively participated in numerous community service projects, including Read Across America, Boys' N Girls Club of Starkville, Habitat for Humanity, and local nursing homes. He also co-founded a non-profit in California, inspired by his own family's story, that supports single parents pursuing higher education.

Montana State University nominates senior quarterback Tommy Mellott for the 2024 Freddie Solomon Community Spirit Award. A two-time second team All-Big Sky selection and this year’s preseason all-league quarterback, Tommy is deeply committed to community service. He won the 2023 Doris Robinson Scholar-Athlete Award for academics, community service, and athletic performance. After the pandemic canceled Montana’s Shrine Game, Tommy raised over $50,000 for Shriner’s Children’s Hospital. He also donates to a su***de prevention organization through an NIL arrangement and has logged hundreds of service hours while maintaining a 4.0 GPA in Financial Engineering.

Another great candidate for The 2024 Freddie Solomon Community Spirit Award: Kentucky graduate and outside linebacker J.J. Weaver embodies the spirit of the Freddie Solomon Community Spirit Award through his impactful work on and off the field. A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Weaver has been a key leader for the Wildcats' defense, but his contributions go beyond football.

Weaver, who was born with six fingers on his right hand, has overcome significant challenges, including losing his father to homicide and his high school coach to cancer. Despite these hardships, he has become an advocate for mental health, launching an 8-week peer-led grief counseling group at the University of Kentucky, the first of its kind on campus. His efforts earned a $40,000 grant to expand the program, making it accessible to all students by the fall of 2024.

In addition to his advocacy work, Weaver has organized numerous community service events, including free football camps, bike drives, and back-to-school initiatives for children in Lexington and Louisville. His resilience and dedication to helping others have earned him the Kentucky Pro Football Hall of Fame's 2024 Ron Butler Character in Adversity Award and a spot on the SEC Community Service Team.

Weaver's foundation, "The Perfect Fit," continues to make a positive impact, and his story serves as an inspiration for overcoming adversity and giving back to the community. , , , ,
