Meet peer specialist Vanessa. She is a person in a long term recovery, a veteran, and an important part of Hillsborough Recovery Coalition. She attends many recovery related community events and also leads the Warriors in Recovery meeting right here at HRC.

It is important to her that she shares her recovery story, resources, and relatable experience with other veterans. Today she did that at the Women’s Veterans Coffee Social at Veterans Memorial Park.

Today was extra special for Vanessa. Not only is it National Women's Veterans Day 🙌🏻 but today, she was coined on behalf of congressman Vern Buchanan.

Being "coined" is the military tradition of being presented with a custom medallion, known as a challenge coin, by a senior leader to recognize excellence, a job well done, or a specific achievement

Happy National Women's Veteran's Day to all who have served. We're proud of your achievement Vanessa. Thank you for being an important part of the HRC team.

⭐PEER SPOTLIGHT⭐

SKYYYYYYE! We had the pleasure of meeting Skye when he took the WRAP/CRPS training with us in January of this year.

This training was special because almost half of the entire cohort were students from Victory High. Victory High is a school where all the students are IN RECOVERY. It was so motivational and educational for all of us.

Not long after Skye completed the training, he inquired about working with HRC and we were happy to welcome him to the team!!

Skye is amazing. He's a leader! He's also hilarious, kind, generous, intelligent, hardworking, and dedicated. He is committed to supporting others on their path to recovery through his work with HRC, and Victory Highschool.

Skye is a breathe of fresh air and we are endlessly grateful he chose to join us 🫶🏻

Keep up the great work Skye! You're an inspiration to us all.

•RECOVERY SUCCESS STORY•

In an industry where late nights, and unhealthy coping mechanisms can easily become part of the lifestyle, people like Matt Lang show us it's OK to find your own path to success.

Matt is a person in long-term recovery, a business owner, an artist, a father, a son, a friend, and someone who pours back into the community every chance he gets. Through his self-funded “Toys for Tats” campaign each holiday season, Matt collects toys for local families in exchange for raffle tickets toward thousands of dollars in tattoo work, creating joy, hope, and unforgettable memories for people who may otherwise go without.

If you’ve ever stepped into our Recovery Community Center, you’ve already seen his impact. Matt is the mural artist behind the artwork that helps make our space feel inspiring, and alive with hope.

Recovery didn’t just give Matt his life back, it gave him the opportunity to build a life rooted in discipline, connection, and purpose. Between running a business, showing up for his family and community, staying active in the gym, and training in jiu-jitsu, he continues to prove that there are multiple pathways to recovery.

We are grateful for people like Matt who use their gifts, talents, and experiences to lift others up and show that it's possible to find a fun, and fulfilling life in recovery.
