Flora Brovina deserves to be remembered by generations who never had the chance to know her. A pediatrician, writer and poet, and defender of women’s rights, she stayed to care for people during Kosovo’s darkest years.
In 1992, she founded the Albanian Women’s League, an organization dedicated to protecting women’s rights, providing humanitarian assistance and health education, and empowering women during a period of severe political repression in Kosovo.
She helped establish clinics in private homes so women could give birth and families could receive medical care. Arrested by Serbian authorities in 1999 and sentenced to 12 years in prison, she became the focus of an international campaign for her freedom. After her release, she continued serving others, establishing a centre for children orphaned by war with Oxfam’s support. She later served in Parliament and signed Kosovo’s Declaration of Independence.
Today, at She Inspires, we mourn Flora Brovina and honour the many lives her work touched. She cared for children as a physician, stood beside women as an activist, and gave voice to pain, womanhood and freedom through poetry. Her life reminds us that compassion becomes powerful when we act on it and that one woman’s courage can reach far beyond her own lifetime.
May the next generation know her name and understand why it matters. Rest in peace, Flora Brovina. Your contribution is part of Kosovo’s history, and remembering it is now part of our responsibility 🤍
