Starting Right, Now

Starting Right, Now Ending Homelessness One Child At A Time "We are not a hand out. We are a hand UP."

SRN's focus is to give the youth opportunities they've never had; to open their eyes to the doors they never knew existed, so that they can one day pass those opportunities on to their own children - thus ending the cycle of homelessness.

Since the release of If You See Them, Vicki has met readers from across the country who have shared how the book opened their eyes to the realities facing young people experiencing homelessness. By exposing the ways systems and policies often fail unaccompanied youth, these stories are helping readers better understand the issue and inspiring them to take action in their own communities.

β€œWe are kids who just need a chance.” πŸ’›

SRN alum Khalisa knows what that chance can mean. Now, her goal is to come back as a mentor to be a voice for current students and remind them that experiencing homelessness doesn't determine who they are or what comes next.

SRN gave Khalisa the support and opportunity to build a different future. One day, she hopes to help another young person do the same. 🀍

A safe place to live. People who believe in you. The opportunity to imagine what comes next.

When CNN Heroes featured Starting Right, Now in 2019, SRN student Myesha shared what it felt like to suddenly have opportunities she hadn't had before and the confidence to see new possibilities for her future.

Years later, that remains at the heart of SRN's work: giving young people experiencing homelessness the stability, support, and opportunities they need to determine what comes next.

Long-term relationships change long-term outcomes.

For more than 18 years, SRN has built relationships with young people that don't end when they graduate, move into their first apartment, or reach the next milestone. Years later, our alumni are building careers, raising families, pursuing their goals and still staying connected to the people who stood beside them along the way.

These relationships are at the heart of what Vicki Sokolik has learned about creating lasting change for young people experiencing homelessness and the stories she brings to audiences across the country. πŸŽ€πŸ“–

What you nurture, grows. 🌱

At Starting Right, Now, preparing young people for independence means looking at the whole person. Our students learn financial literacy, goal setting, healthy living, and practical life skills and they have opportunities to put those lessons into practice in the world around them.

Our partnership with 15th Street Farm is one piece of that comprehensive approach, giving students hands-on experience with sustainability, responsibility, and understanding where their food comes from all at our on-campus urban farm.

We're grateful to 15th Street Farm for creating space for our students to learn, contribute, and grow. πŸ’›

Shanquell's journey is a powerful reminder that a young person's circumstances don't define their future.

From experiencing homelessness to pursuing her dream career in medicine, her story is one of resilience, determination, and the impact of having the right support.

This is one story.

A great book sparks conversation. A meaningful conversation can spark change.

If You See Them: Young, Unhoused, and Alone in America is bringing readers together through book clubs and community discussions that challenge assumptions, deepen understanding, and inspire action around youth homelessness.

Every conversation is an opportunity to see these young people and our role in supporting them, with greater empathy and clarity.

Some of the strongest mentors are those who've experienced the journey themselves.

Hillary came to SRN as a student experiencing homelessness and, over the past decade, grew into a confident, independent adult. She always knew that when she had the opportunity, she'd return as an SRN mentor.

Today, she's part of the support system that once changed her life, helping another young person build a future of their own.

Before entering SRN, Aiden was moved from place to place with his belongings in a trash bag. Eventually, he started to believe the bag said something about him.

No child is trash. No young person should be made to feel disposable.

At Starting Right, Now, we believe every young person deserves to be seen, valued, and supported as they build a future of their own. 🀍
