The Small Magic Foundation The Small Magic Foundation exists only to help change the world one small act of kindness at a time.

The Small Magic Foundation exists to empower youth aged 8-21 by providing essential resources, mentorship, and opportunities that enable them to unlock their potential and inspire positive change in their communities. Meet Maribel Garrett, the newest member of the Small Magic Foundation board! 🎉

Maribel is the Community Engagement Coordinator for the City of Tampa and the City's Hispanic Liaison. She works with departments across Tampa to bring services and information right to neighborhoods, especially West Tampa and our growing Hispanic community, so Spanish speakers stay informed and involved.

Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Maribel learned the value of service early. She earned her education degree at the University of Puerto Rico, then moved to Tampa for her master's at USF. Her leadership includes the Mayor's Hispanic Advisory Council, Tampa Hispanic Heritage, Inc., the Rotary Club of Ybor City, and the USF Latin Community Advisory Council.

A woman who connects people to what they need? Yeah, she's gonna fit right in with a team that backs teen-led change. ✨

Five hundred dollars doesn’t go very far these days. It’s a car repair. A month of daycare, barely. A nice-but-not-fancy dinner out for a family of four, maybe twice. We get it. On its own, $500 can feel like a modest number.

But hand that same $500 to a team of teenagers with a real problem they want to solve in their own neighborhood, and something different happens. It stops being a small amount of money and starts being permission. Permission to buy the paint and lumber for a project they’ve been sketching on notebook paper for months. Permission to print flyers, rent a table, order supplies, and actually start instead of just planning. For a lot of teens, $500 is the difference between an idea that stays an idea and a project that gets real.

For the past year, if you asked us what Small Magic Foundation was up to, our honest answer was a lot of unglamorous stuff. Bylaws. A board. A bank account. Grant guidelines rewritten more times than we can count. None of it makes for a great Instagram post, and we know some of you have been patiently waiting for the part where we actually do the thing we said we’d do.

That part is here.

We spent this past year building because we didn’t want to hand a teenager $500 and a shrug. We wanted a real process behind it: a way to evaluate applications fairly, a board that actually understands what we’re funding and why, a way to track whether the money did what we hoped it would do. Building comes first because doing it badly would be worse than not doing it at all.

Here’s why the timing matters. *A 2025 World Health Organization report found that 13 to 17 year olds have the highest rate of loneliness of any age group, nearly 21 percent. And Gallup recently found that 30 percent of middle and high schoolers say they feel little to no sense of purpose in their lives. Read that twice. Nearly a third of teenagers are walking around without a clear sense of why they matter.

The same Gallup research points to something hopeful buried in that number: one of the strongest predictors of whether a young person feels a sense of purpose is whether they believe they’re making a positive difference in someone else’s life. Not someday. Now.
