Most conferences follow the same formula. This one didn’t. 🙌

Yesterday at the Nonprofit Leadership Conference, I walked out the door actually energized — already thinking differently, already putting things into motion.

I reconnected with old friends, made new ones, and got a much-needed break from the heaviness of the world right now. At one point, we all lit up the room with our flashlights and took the stage to share why we matter.

That’s the way to conference.

Thank you, Nonprofit Leadership Center, for reminding us to pour back into ourselves — so we can pour even more out. 💡

Tampa Bay has 22,000 young people who aren't in school and aren't employed.

The lifetime cost to support each one — through public assistance, mental health services, incarceration, and rehab — is $250,000.

Multiply that out. That's $5 billion. Paid by the community. Slowly. Reactively. Long after the window to make a real difference has closed.

The Small Magic Foundation is asking a different question: what if we got there first?

A $500 microgrant. A spark. A starting line.
This isn't just a charitable idea — it's the smartest investment Tampa Bay can make. Would love your thoughts.

What can $500 actually do? 💸

For most adults, it's a car payment or a grocery run. For a teenager with a big idea — it's the difference between starting and letting that idea die. It's the supplies for the project. The domain for the website. The flyers for the event.

At The Small Magic Foundation, we believe the smallest investment can yield the most magic.
We're building the engine; the fuel comes next.

What a day! We were so excited to sponsor the South Tampa Chamber Luncheon this afternoon.

The Small Magic Foundation's very own Founder Lisa Demmi and Vice Chair Andrea Daly were in the room sharing our mission — and the number that had everyone talking: our communities are already spending $5 billion in long-term support costs. A grant of just $500–$1,000 to a group of young people between the ages of 13 and 19 early on can help prevent that. Investing in our youth now means less burden on our community later.

Thank you to everyone who stopped to chat and to the South Tampa Chamber for having us. This community is everything. 💛

Hot take: stop calling teens “the leaders of tomorrow.”
They’re leading right now.

At The Small Magic Foundation, we support teens ages 13–19 exactly where they are—not after they “grow up.” They see what’s happening in the world and too often, someone tells them they can’t make a difference.

We’re here to make sure they have the resources (and the support) to try.

What is The Small Magic Foundation and why does it exist?

We are a Tampa Bay 501c3 whose mission is to inspire and empower youth by equipping them to drive change in themselves and their communities, through small acts with big impact.

We exist because there is a gap in opportunities for local kids here in the Tampa Bay area. AND there are very real costs associated with that gap.

There are approximately 22,000 youth in the area who have not finished school and who are unemployed. During the course of the life, they will cost the taxpayers of this community about $250,000 each. That adds up to roughly

$5 billion dollars. This is the hard figure in dollars that impacts this community.

There is the talent gap issue that is associated with this. When our local businesses can't find enough skilled workers to fill high-demand positions, they struggle to stay competitive, which holds back our entire regional economy. And when our young people are stuck on the sidelines, our community misses out on all the fresh ideas and creativity they could be bringing to the table.

When young people in Tampa Bay aren’t in school or working, it takes a heartbreaking toll on their well-being that goes far beyond their bank accounts. These aren’t just statistics; they are our neighbors facing real struggles, dealing with much higher rates of mental health challenges and substance use. This group is also more likely to struggle with chronic physical illnesses, which makes it even harder for them to get back on their feet.

The cost of doing nothing in Tampa is incredibly high, as you can see from the numbers and data above. The investment needed to spark a real change is surprisingly small. We can either watch these costs keep climbing, or we can step up with a minor investment right now to create a much brighter path for our youth and our entire community.

Check back next week, and we’ll walk through exactly how we’re planning to tackle these challenges.
