The transition into a new school year is massive for little ones. New building, new rules, new faces, it doesn't take much for a child to hit sensory overload and completely melt down.

Instead of treating overstimulation like a behavior problem, creating a dedicated Quiet Corner gives students the space they need to step away, reset, and learn how to self-regulate.💛

What actually makes a quiet corner work in the classroom:

Tangible Tools: Keep an orange folder with coloring sheets, notebooks for drawing or writing out feelings, Play-Doh, and sensory fidgets.

Visual Timers: Using a visual timer gives kids a clear, predictable boundary so they know when it’s time to rejoin the group.

Emotion & Feeling Books: Stock books that name emotions (like Todd Parr or feel-good stories) so students can process sadness, anger, or anxiety visually.

Choice & Autonomy: Let them know that taking a break, whether laying on the carpet with a book or using a quiet seat,is always a safe choice.

When we explicitly teach kids how to use these spaces at the start of the year, something amazing happens: they stop melting down and start learning how to walk away, reset, and advocate for what they need before the overwhelm takes over.

SUPPORT WITH DIGNITY
We believe that every student should have access to essential everyday items without barriers.

THE REAL ACTION: That’s why we partner directly with schools to establish and restock Care Closets right on campus. By working together, we ensure that items like hygiene products and basic essentials are readily available whenever a student needs them, handled in a way that feels supportive and empowering.

THANK YOU: 💛 We are incredibly grateful to the school staff and community members who make these respectful spaces possible.

165 backpacks. Countless smiles. 💙

We’re incredibly grateful to the Junior League for donating 165 backpacks filled with school supplies, along with two large boxes of bicycle helmets, to support the schools we serve through our Care Closet program.

Your generosity is helping students start the school year feeling prepared, supported, and ready to learn. 🎒✨

Thank you, Junior League of St. Petersburg for showing up for our students and our community. We’re so grateful to have you as part of this mission. 💙

When severe hurricane damage left classrooms ruined, books destroyed, materials in dumpsters, and spaces wiped clean, the impact went far beyond physical destruction. It disrupted the safe haven teachers work so hard to build for their students.

For Tammy, watching her classroom library disappear overnight was heartbreaking. But the story didn't end with the storm.

Through the power of community and direct support from FUELS, we were able to stand alongside Tammy to completely restore her classroom, replacing lost resources, rebuilding her library piece by piece, and getting her room ready to welcome students back.💛

This is more than just replacing books and supplies. It’s about restoring hope, stability, and the heartbeat of the classroom.

We are so deeply grateful to everyone in our community who makes this work possible. Because when we lift up our teachers, we rebuild the future for our students. 📦✨

✨ Sometimes a calling begins long before we realize where it will lead us.
At just seven years old, Sherrill McCarthy wrote an essay declaring that her dream was to work with children with special needs. Nearly 40 years later, she continues to live that dream every day.
We are thrilled to welcome Sherrill to the FUELS Board of Directors!
A proud native Floridian and graduate of St. Petersburg High School, Sherrill has dedicated her career to helping children feel capable, unique, valued, and deeply loved. She holds a degree in Special Education with endorsements in Exceptional Student Education, Gifted Education, ESOL, and Reading. Her commitment to continued learning remains just as strong today as she works toward additional endorsements in Prekindergarten Disabilities and Resiliency.
Sherrill’s impact reaches far beyond her own classroom. Throughout her career, she has mentored fellow educators, facilitated professional development focused on exceptional learners, and built meaningful partnerships with families. Many of those relationships have continued long after students have left her classroom, with Sherrill continuing to encourage and advocate for them through college and beyond.
Her heart for service also extends throughout her community. Sherrill has given countless hours to youth sports through leadership, fundraising, coaching, and volunteer service, always looking for ways to make a positive difference for children and families.
Above all, Sherrill believes every child deserves the support, encouragement, and opportunities they need to succeed, not only in school, but throughout their lives.
That belief is at the very heart of FUELS.
We are incredibly grateful to have Sherrill’s nearly four decades of experience, advocacy, compassion, and heart joining our leadership team.
Please join us in giving Sherrill a very warm welcome to the FUELS Board of Directors! 💛

✨ Leadership is about more than holding a title. It is about bringing people together around a shared purpose.
We are proud to announce that Alex Sirimarco has stepped into the role of Board Chair for Florida’s Unique Education Learning Support.
Since joining the FUELS Board of Directors, Alex has brought a powerful combination of nonprofit experience, community engagement, advocacy, and heart to our organization. Her professional background in fund development and education, along with her extensive involvement throughout the St. Petersburg nonprofit community, gives her a unique perspective as she helps guide FUELS into its next chapter.
As the mother of a daughter on the autism spectrum, Alex also brings a deeply personal understanding of why equitable access, inclusive education, and meaningful support for students and families matter.
We are grateful for Alex’s willingness to lead, her commitment to our mission, and the passion she brings to serving educators, students, and families.
Please join us in congratulating Alex on her new role as Board Chair. We are excited for what is ahead for FUELS under her leadership. 💛

✨ What if every child felt truly seen in their learning journey?
That’s the heart behind why we are so excited to welcome our newest FUELS board member, Kerri Dolan Haire.
Kerri is a Nurse Practitioner and a mother of seven whose family’s educational journey has given her a deep, personal understanding that no two students learn the same. As a parent of gifted learners, a child with exceptional student education (ESE) needs, and a child who is homeschooled due to educational challenges, she knows firsthand how important it is for students to feel supported, understood, and appropriately challenged.
Her passion for education is rooted in something we deeply value at FUELS: when children are recognized for who they are and how they learn, they thrive.
Through both her clinical background and lived experience, Kerri brings empathy, advocacy, and a collaborative spirit to our board. She is especially committed to ensuring individual learning needs are recognized — and that teachers are supported in the incredibly important work they do every single day.
We are honored to have her voice, heart, and leadership helping shape the future of FUELS.
💛 Please join us in welcoming Kerri Ann to the board!

💛 Before the first bell rings, educators spend hours turning four empty walls into an inviting, functional space for learning. Every bin, book, and desk layout is chosen with intention.

OUR PARTNERSHIP: When educators send requests to FUELS for specific classroom items, our community works together to help provide those exact resources. We’re grateful to come alongside teachers to help ease the physical prep work it takes to welcome students back.
