Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an amazing man and community activist who left us with a rich legacy in his shortened life. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to him.

His words on education, money and morality are eerily prescient and resonate in 2022 for many of us. He supported ""The Freedom Budget"" as an ambitious step toward economic equality. It was written by Asa Philip Randolph with Dr. King’s support. Completed in January 1967, the Freedom Budget was a help to reduce poverty.

This was a step-by-step plan to wipe out poverty within ten years. Its goals were to provide better schools, homes, clean air, jobs and guaranteed income through a $200 increase in federal income taxes on the wealthy.Through his many profound words, he has provided us with valuable lessons on money: overspending, materialism, lifestyle inflation, achieving excellence in education and work, giving back to others and leaving assets for his loved ones.

Start this warming one-pot meal before you head out for the day.

By the time you get home, the well-seasoned meat will be tender and mouthwatering. —Stephanie Rabbitt-Schappacher, Cincinnati, Ohio

1 pound beef stew meat
2 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
1 can (14-1/2 ounces) beef broth
1 can (11-1/2 ounces) V8 juice
2 celery ribs, chopped
2 medium carrots, chopped
1 medium sweet onion, chopped
3 bay leaves
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 tablespoon cold water
1/2 cup frozen corn
1/2 cup frozen peas"

Parents may be inclined to shield their children from making poor money decisions. Rich Ramassini, a certified financial planner and senior vice president with financial firm PNC Investments in Pittsburgh, experienced that firsthand when his son squandered birthday gift money in a week's time.

However, rather than prohibit impulse buying, Ramassini stepped aside so his son could experience the disappointment of a poor purchase. ""That's a much better mistake than a $1,000 mistake or a $10,000 mistake,"" Ramassini says. It was a lesson learned when his son later asked for advice on how to better manage some money received at Christmas.

Every purchase has an opportunity cost!

Children also need to know money is finite, even for wealthy families. That means money used to purchase one item won't be available to purchase other items. ""Make them aware of trade-offs as soon as possible,"" says Peter Nigro, professor and chair of the finance department at Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island."

The sooner they learn, the better prepared they are for the real world.

18 students are particpating in the Biz Kid Academy program in conjuction with John Maxwell's leadership program.

NEEDS vs WANTS

There is no shortage of statistics on the sad state of formal financial education for children.

According to the Council for Economic Education, only a third of U.S. states require high school students to take a personal finance class in order to graduate. And one in five 15-year-olds in the U.S. lacked basic financial literacy in 2017, according to the Program for International Student Assessment, a global exam that measures knowledge in areas such as math, science and reading. Parents may feel unqualified to teach their children about money, but experts say no degree in finance or special knowledge is necessary. Instead, financial literacy starts by teaching the following a few a few money lessons:

1. The difference between wants and needs.

Good financial decisions start by being able to distinguish between what is necessary to have and what is nice to have.

What an AMAZING DAY! Kidz Count’s Biz Kid Academy c/o 2022 Induction Ceremony was truly one i’ll never forget.

Each student received custom Biz Kid blazers during the ceremony and were able to join an elite group of students who’s determined to change the trajectory of their families through business.
