COGI’s Promise to the Tamaqua Community

Clinical Outcomes Group Inc., is partnering with the Tamaqua Area School District and the Schuylkill County Drug and Alcohol (Schuylkill County SCA) to implement a comprehensive opioid misuse community prevention project in Tamaqua, PA. The project will leverage the district’s existing relationship with the Step-Up Tamaqua coalition and the Tamaqua Area Community Partnership.

The project which is funded by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency and Departments of Drug and Alcohol Programs and Education will provide support to middle school students and families in order to prevent the onset of substance misuse. The long term goal is to prevent opioid abuse later in life by providing participating youth with the skills and knowledge to avoid them beginning to use any substances and to seek pro-social opportunities instead.

BOTVIN LIFESKILLS TRAINING (LST)

Developed by Dr. Gilbert Botvin, The LST is a research validated substance abuse prevention program that is proven to reduce the use of alcohol, to***co, and drug abuse. This program is designed to provide adolescents and young teens with the confidence and skills necessary to handle challenging situations. It teaches students the necessary skills to resist peer pressures to smoke, drink, and use drugs. It helps students to develop a greater self esteem and self confidence, and enables students to effectively cope with anxiety. It is backed by over 30 scientific studies and is recognized as a Model of Exemplary program by an array of government agencies including the U.S Department of Education and the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention.

STRENGTHENING FAMILIES PROGRAM: FOR PARENTS AND YOUTH 10-14 (SFP)

The Strengthening Families Program: For Parents and Youth 10–14 (SFP 10–14) is an adaptation of the Strengthening Families Program for parents and their adolescent children. The program aims to reduce substance use and behavior problems during adolescence through improved skills in nurturing and child management by parents and improved interpersonal and personal competencies among youths. The topics include developing appropriate rules, encouraging good behavior, using consequences, building bridges, dealing with peer pressure, and protecting against substance abuse.

PUBLIC HEALTH CAMPAIGN

Clinical Outcomes Group Inc. will work with community stakeholders and prevention coalitions to increase awareness about the danger of substance abuse. This will be accomplished through educational presentations and materials, community level trainings, and environmental strategies that will change the mindset of the community and provide additional pro-social supports for youth and their families.

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY

The Communities That Care Social Development Strategy (SDS) will serve as an underlying framework for this part of the project. This will consist of training and educating the community at large on the SDS public health model. The model is an evidenced based framework which organizes protective factors into a simple strategy for action to promote positive youth development. It identifies the following key components: healthy beliefs and clear standards for behavior, bonding, opportunities, skills, and recognition. It aims to recognize that positive social orientation, resiliency, and intellect can facilitate bonding and can be nurtured by communities and adults.
