VETS is busy today. Not only are we doing Front Porch Pickin at the shop, but we are also at the Millbrook Boo Fest.

We have a booth set up with games for the kiddos and lots of prizes to win.

VETS is proud to be at the Alabama National Guard Headquarters today for a resource fair.

We are surrounded by other great agencies that support veterans around the state of Alabama.

Come out and see us until 2:00 pm today and learn more about VETS and what other resources may help you or a friend or family member.

Come out to the Alabama Cotton Festival this Saturday. It is a great family event with tons of cars, food, vendors, and community support organizations, like VETS.

We will have our booth with swag, program information, and one of our veteran built motorcycles. Come out and learn more about VETS.

Saturday 10/10 is Cotton Festival! Time for everyone families especially. There will be lots of lots of vendors food trucks streets blocked off playgrounds open loads of fun. Come and shop Vintage Antiques Eclectic on your way to the festival. Open 8-4

VETS was blessed Saturday as the Sentry Riders Motorcycle Group stopped by for some fellowship and to support us.

David Rogers and Paul Wolbeck have been mustered up their team of Do-gooders to enjoy some perfect autumn riding weather. They rode out to our shop in Tallassee and had some lunch and checked out our projects. Before they left they donated over $400 to VETS Veteran Education Training & Support . This will help us sustain operations and continue to lower the veteran su***de rate in Alabama.

Last night I made a trip to Birmingham to see an old friend, who is in the hospital. It turned out to be a mini-reunion with two men I shared my past with. I had not seen either of them since the late 90's, but we picked up where we left off.

The three of us were all part of the USAF PAVE LOW community and we wore a thin red scarf tucked into the collar of our flight suits. No matter where you were in the world, if you saw one of these scarfs, you knew someone had your back and you had theirs. The PAVE LOW was an MH-53 Special Operations helicopter that executed daring special operations and combat search and rescue missions around the world that rarely made the headlines. Dennis, the friend I went to see, was on one of those missions with me in September 1995. We flew through the hostile skies of Bosnia in search of two French pilots that were shot down. The call sign of the French crew was EBRO 33, and we searched a fog filled valley two nights in a row. We took rounds both nights and returned fire from both helicopters. Dennis took a bullet on the second night and was MEDEVACTED to Naples, Italy as soon as we landed back at our base.

I'm glad Dennis is still with us and I'm glad I made the trip to Birmingham. It put a smile on his face in a time when there is not a lot to smile about. Our simple actions can make a huge impact on another person's life. Pick up your phone and call or text an old friend that you haven't seen in a while. Take some time and visit and old friend. You will both benefit from it.
