It takes a village to empower the next generation. 🤝

Yesterday, Florida Impact and Sheeler High School GEMS Youth Advocacy Leadership Program hosted the 2026 Youth Civic Engagement Summit at the Billy Dean Community Center in Apopka. Seeing our GEMS connect with local leaders like Orange County Commissioner Mike Scott, City of Orlando Commissioner Bakari Burns, Executive Director of Equal Ground, Genesis Robinson, and Councilwoman Nadia Anderson was a reminder of why we do this work.

Thank you to all our guests for dedicating your time to inspire Apopka’s youth. And a special thank you to the incredible Isadora Dean—Apopka is better because of your heart for these kids.

To every school lunch hero in Florida: Thank you for all that you do. 🧡🍎

Since today was , we and many others are celebrating the incredible food service staff who keep our students nourished and ready to learn. School meals provide more than just nutrition—they provide the focus and opportunity needed for success.

The Impact:

🍎 800,000+ students rely on school breakfast daily.

🍕 50%+ of public school students depend on free or reduced-price meals.

Let’s show our appreciation by protecting these vital programs. Reach out to your legislators and tell them you support strong school meal programs for our kids.

For our next spotlight, we’re centering Sadaf Knight, CEO of the Florida Policy Institute, on the systemic barriers facing Florida families today. As Sadaf notes, food insecurity is not an individual failing; it is the direct result of systemic issues in our economy and communities that make healthy food inaccessible for many.

This , we’re looking at the real factors impacting food access in Florida. As , founder of , highlights: for too long, solutions were designed for communities instead of with them.

We’re proud to spotlight leaders like Roniece who are dismantling these systemic barriers. The path to health equity requires a total shift in how we view food equity and public policy—placing the community at the heart of the design.

We are officially on the ground in Tampa! 📍

The Tampa Food Security Project has launched, and we kicked things off recently with a "Smart Snack" demonstration at Bible Truth Ministry Academy featuring healthy charcuterie boards. By turning nutrition into a hands-on charcuterie experience, we’re teaching elementary students that a balanced diet isn't just a lesson—it's a lifestyle.

We are looking forward to continuing this journey with these amazing students and empowering them with the knowledge and tools to properly care for their bodies. 🧀🍓

🚨 IMPORTANT: Changes to SNAP Benefits in Florida (Effective April 20, 2026)

Big changes are coming to Florida’s SNAP program next month. As part of a new federal demonstration project with the U.S. Department of Agriculture purchasing restrictions will be implemented starting April 20th. At Florida Impact, our mission is to ensure that every family has access to healthy, affordable food. We are working closely with national advocates like the Food Research & Action Center and MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger to monitor how these changes affect our local communities.

What is changing?
Starting April 20, certain items like soda and ultra-processed snacks will no longer be eligible for SNAP purchase.

What stays the same? Many household staples—including sparkling water, granola bars, fresh produce, and freshly baked goods—remain fully eligible.

Why this matters: With roughly 74% of Florida SNAP participants living at or below the poverty line, we are committed to ensuring these policy shifts don't create new barriers to food access.

📖 : We’ve broken down the full list of changes and what they mean for your family in our latest blog post at floridaimpact.org.
