Insurance questions have a way of taking over more of the day than they should.

When a payer response is confusing, a payment is delayed, or a claim does not make sense, it can pull attention away from patient care and practice operations.

FDA members have access to Casey Stoutamire, FDA Chief Legal Officer, for help navigating third-party payer and insurance payment concerns. When payer issues start taking up too much of your time, FDA membership gives you a place to start.

Aetna has announced it will discontinue issuing paper checks to out-of-network dentists. The FDA opposes this strong-arm tactic, which makes it difficult for providers to accept their preferred payment unless they join Aetna’s network.

The FDA and ADA are challenging the policy and urging Aetna not to implement the change.

In the meantime, out-of-network dentists are encouraged to:

✅ Require payment for services at the time of service.
✅ Submit the claim and have Aetna send any applicable reimbursement directly to the patient.

FDA members: Check your inbox or visit the link in our comments for talking points to help explain this change to patients.

FDA members with questions can contact FDA Chief Legal Officer Casey Stoutamire at [email protected] or 850.350.7202.

One of the most overlooked benefits of FDA membership? Contract analysis.

The ADA Contract Analysis Service analyzes third-party managed-care contracts to inform you in clear language about the provisions of the contracts so you can make informed decisions.

FDA members have access to contract analysis services that help you better understand what you're signing before you commit. Make informed decisions with confidence and avoid costly surprises down the road.

Several new Florida Board of Dentistry anesthesia rules take effect Aug. 19, 2026, with changes affecting equipment, patient monitoring, anesthesia permits, inspections, and authorized locations.

Among the most notable updates for moderate sedation permit holders are two new EKG requirements:

✅ An electrocardiograph (EKG) is now required as standard equipment for moderate sedation permit holders.

✅ Patients administered drug(s) for moderate sedation must be continuously monitored intraoperatively by EKG, in addition to pulse oximetry and capnography. Continuously monitored vital signs must be taken and recorded at a minimum of 5-minute intervals.

These are part of several anesthesia rule changes taking effect Aug. 19.

FDA members received an email on Aug. 17 with details on the full set of changes and are encouraged to reference that communication to review the updated requirements.

Questions after reviewing the update? FDA members can contact FDA Chief Legal Officer Casey Stoutamire at [email protected] for clarification.
