Right now, the NCAA is targeting the 2026–27 academic year for the new “5-in-5” eligibility model to begin. Multiple reports and NCAA statements point to an expected implementation date of August 1, 2026, if officially approved.

The NCAA Division I Board already directed the Division I Cabinet to move forward with the proposal in April 2026, and leadership meetings and votes are continuing throughout the spring and summer.

What this means practically:

• Class of 2026 freshmen would likely be the first full group under the new rules.
• Current athletes competing under the old system in 2025–26 are expected to remain under the current “4 seasons in 5 years” structure.
• The rule is not expected to be retroactive for athletes whose eligibility ends by spring 2026.

This is why college coaches are already discussing roster management concerns for the 2026 and 2027 recruiting classes, because schools may suddenly keep players an extra year instead of opening scholarships for incoming freshmen.
