Today, we honor Juneteenth, a celebration of freedom, resilience, culture, and the enduring strength of the Black community. As women committed to sisterhood, service, scholarship, and leadership, we recognize the importance of remembering our history while continuing the work toward equity and justice for future generations. May this day inspire reflection, education, unity, and joy as we celebrate Black excellence and the legacy of those who paved the way. Happy Juneteenth!

A Black-Owned/Woman-Owned Business called Nell’d It! was the venue of choice recently, for the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the Chi Upsilon Omega Chapter (XYQ).

Members participated in a “Paint Party” at the popular art studio that hosts parties, classes and programs in the form of art experiences, for kids, teens and adults.

The Sisterly Relations activity was relaxing, fun and a chance to get creative. It was also a great opportunity to engage in the Sorority’s “Black Dollar Days,” when we “Wear Pink, Spend Green and Buy Black.”

During the month of June, XYQ joins AKA chapters worldwide in focusing on the Sorority’s International Initiative, “Build Our Economic Wealth”— personally and within our organization and our community, by “leveraging our collective buying power to funnel revenue to Black-owned businesses and brands.”

Please help XYQ to finish the month strong, as we remain intentional about spending our money with Black-owned companies.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the Chi Upsilon Omega Chapter, proudly partners with VyStar Credit Union, 3208 Mahan Drive, Tallahassee, for a FREE community event, on Saturday, June 6, 9 a.m.-noon— “Shred to Protect” — a secure and eco-friendly way to dispose of unwanted paper.

What kind of paper? Old bank statements, credit card bills and loan documents, medical records, tax returns, expired identification cards, credit cards and more.

This is XYQ’s second year collaborating on the project with VyStar. It’s a perfect fit for the Sorority’s International Program Initiative, “Enhance Our Environment.” One of the focus areas is “shredding.”

“Shred to Protect” is a great way to declutter at home, and at the same time, accomplish our goal of reducing the burden on landfills and natural resources.

The intermittent rain in our area is a beautiful sight — especially for the ladies of the Chi Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. That’s because in April, “Earth Month,” the Chapter planted flowers and trees at schools in Leon and Jefferson counties.

The Sorority’s International Program Initiative, “Enhance Our Environment,” calls on AKA chapters worldwide to collectively make a significant impact by promoting the adoption of sustainable, responsible practices. Further, it supports programs that encourage and engage citizens and communities to use eco-friendly methods “to improve and protect the environment.”

The focus areas are tree planting, community and home gardens, waste reduction, shredding and recycling electronics.

Chi Upsilon Omega’s mentees in the AKA Youth Leadership Institute (AKA YLI), and the Precious Ivies Auxiliary are participating in the initiative as well. Chapter members Myra Hart and Dionne Minor are XYQ’s chairman and co-chairman, respectively.
