It can be done!

Dear Colleagues: Today marks the 23rd anniversary of when No Kill went from the theoretical to the real. On June 10, 2001, not a single No Kill community existed in the U.S. On June 11, there was one. As I drove into the parking lot for the first time as the new director of the shelter in Tompkins C...

Sarasota, FL, City Commissioners voted unanimously to require local animal shelters to maintain a minimum 90% placement rate. The ordinance must still be approved at a second reading before it becomes law. But People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is trying to ensure this does not happe...

As everyone is well aware, dogs often get anxiety and frightened because of fireworks and other loud noises that can be heard on the 4th of July. As a result, a few years ago our team decided to take a new approach to help calm the dogs at our Animal Care Center by having inmates comfort them during...

"Shelter killing is the leading cause of death for healthy dogs and cats in the United States. Today, an animal entering a shelter has only one chance in two of making it out alive, and in some places it is as low as one in ten, with shelters blaming a lack of available homes as the cause of death. And yet, statistics reveal that there are over seven times as many people looking to bring an animal into their home every year as there are animals being killed in shelters because they lack one. Half of all animals who enter our nation’s shelters go out the back door in body bags rather than out the front door in the loving arms of adopters despite the fact that there are plenty of homes available. And when animal lovers question the excuses used to justify this killing, shelters and their national allies respond, ā€œWe are all on the same side,ā€ ā€œWe all want the same thing,ā€ ā€œWe are all animal loversā€ and insist that criticism of shelters and staff is unfair and callous because ā€œNo one wants to kill.ā€ The facts, however, tragically and frequently tell a very different story. How can you fix a problem you refuse to admit exists? How can shelters reform their practices when they refuse to have standards and benchmarks that would hold them accountable to the best performing shelters in the nation? They can’t. They don’t. And they won’t. So you will have to do it for them. These guides will show you how." ~ No Kill Advocacy Center

NEWS! Best Friends Animal Society just released their 2021 nation-wide no-kill initiative results. For the fourth year in a row, Delaware has been recognized as a no-kill state. Delaware was the first state in the country to be identified as ā€œno-killā€ in 2019, with only New Hampshire reaching that coveted status since then. We’re proud to be the first open access shelter in the state’s history to reach 90%+ lifesaving, a level we’ve sustained since taking responsibility for the state’s lost/stray dogs, cruelty cases, and injured at-large cats and dogs six years ago. According to the state’s 2021 statistics, we intake 65% of the state’s shelter animals, so our success combines with that of other Delaware shelters to make Delaware a national model for lifesaving. A huge part of this recognition also goes to all of you in the community in Delaware. Kudos for advocating for and supporting progressive programs! (For more on the national no-kill data, check out the Best Friends website: https://bestfriends.org/no-kill-2025.)

High Priority this week!
We need a Foster or an Adopter this weekend!

Kimber is a 2 year old, 60lbs, german shepherd, malinois, black mouth cur mix. She is incredibly sweet and smart and ā€œhigh energyā€. Kimber would be a great running or walking companion.

She is spayed and microchipped. And up to date on all her shots. House, crate trained and knows her basic commands.

She plays very well with other dogs off leash. A fenced in backyard where Kimber is able to run around in with another young dog who wants to play with her constantly would be good.

Verified Applacation and Home visit required.

Please go to: www.FloridaPetsAlive.org and fill out a Pet Adoption Questioner and email it to [email protected].
We will then set up a met and great for your and Kimber.

If you can not Adopt or Foster a Pet please consider donating @ FloridaPetsAlive.org or mail a donation to Florida Pets Alive Inc. 730 East Park Avenue, Tallahassee 32301, to help Vet and Care for the Pets.
