Some things don't go in the trash or bulk pick up, but there is a way for you to get them out of your house- AND you can get a utility bill credit for them! Read on to learn more:

Is spring cleaning at the top of your "to do" list, and you shudder to think about it? No worries! To help you declutter your home and garage, the City of Tallahassee's "Cash for Trash" event is back! The biannual event will be held on Saturday, April 18, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the City's Community Beautification and Waste Management facility, located at 2727 Major James Morgan Jr. Way (formerly Municipal Way), near Messer Field.

"Cash for Trash" is traditionally held each year on the third Saturday in April and October. It enables residential customers to properly dispose of household bulk trash items, as well as household hazardous waste.

This event is not for commercial business customers.

As a thank you, participating City residential customers with active garbage service will receive a $5 credit toward their utility bill. Customers can make multiple trips; however, only one $5 credit per utility account will be issued.

Examples of items residents may bring to "Cash for Trash" include furniture, large and small household appliances, household hazardous waste, electronic items (including computers) and tires (limit four per customer, no commercial tires). Batteries, cleaners, paints, pesticides and solvents are also accepted. These household hazardous waste items can have a serious impact on the environment if improperly disposed of through the trash or sewer system.

Although the City encourages residential utility customers to use their every-other-week bulky item collection service for disposing of large items at curbside, "Cash for Trash" is especially useful for those who live in apartments or have several large items to dispose.

No household garbage, yard waste or construction/demolition debris will be accepted.

Because of its commitment to fostering an environmentally sustainable community, the City continues to be a leader in the field. In 2025, the National Civic League named Tallahassee an All-America City for the third time. Events and programs such as "Cash for Trash" and single-stream recycling, put into action the organization's commitment to environmental-friendly practices.

"Cash for Trash" is coordinated by the City's Community Beautification and Waste Management department. For more information, visit Talgov.com/YOU or call City of Tallahassee Utilities at 850-891-4968.

We hope you can join us for Spruce Up Saturday tomorrow! We will be working on the signs at Mulberry, general litter pick up throughout the neighborhood, and addressing overgrowth by some intersections that make it hard to see around the corner. If you have rakes, gloves, loppers/pruning shears, please bring them! We will meet at the Mulberry signs at 1 pm and then disperse. If you cannot attend, consider taking some time this weekend to check for litter by your house or sprucing up on your own!

Free Seasonal Festivities Abound in Tallahassee!

The City of Tallahassee is spreading festive cheer all December long with beautiful light displays and a joyful lineup of popular events, including Winter Festival, Holiday Stroll, Santa Calling, Cookies with Santa, Elf Night and Soul Santa.

Winter Festival – A Celebration of Lights, Music and the Arts

Celebrate the holiday season with the community on Saturday, Dec. 6, as the 39th annual Winter Festival fills downtown Tallahassee with holly jolly festivities from 3-10 p.m. In addition to food vendors, arts and crafts merchants and sparkling holiday lights, Winter Festival has multiple ways to enjoy the evening with your loved ones.

Catch family-friendly live entertainment as local actors, dancers and musicians take the stage at four locations downtown. As the sun begins to set, take a stroll down Candy Cane Lane. You can sign up online through Dec. 5, or register on-site on Dec. 6, to participate in the spirited Jingle Bell Run. See the Chain of Parks sparkle and shine as the 6 p.m. lighting ceremony commemorates the start of the season, and be sure to secure your spot early for the nighttime parade along Monroe Street.

For more information about this year's Winter Festival activities, visit Talgov.com/WinterFestival.

Candy Cane Lane

Candy Cane Lane in McCarty Park opens at Winter Festival on Dec. 6. Enjoy a stroll through the festive light display from 3-10 p.m. and embrace the sights and sounds of the holiday season. Candy Cane Lane will also be open nightly from 6-9 p.m. Dec. 7-11, 6-11 p.m. Dec. 12-13 and 6-9 p.m. on Dec. 14 for visitors to come back to enjoy later in the week. McCarty Park is located within the Chain of Parks along Park Avenue downtown.

Santa Calling

Let the City of Tallahassee add extra holiday magic to the season by registering for a call from Santa for your little one. This heartwarming event takes place on Thursday, Dec. 11. Registration opened Monday, Dec. 1, on Talgov.com.

Holiday Stroll through Cascades Park

On Saturday, Dec. 13, you can sing and dance to merry melodies as they fill the air of Cascades Park, 1001 S. Gadsden St., from 6-7:30 p.m. at the annual Holiday Stroll.

Hitting happy notes, about a dozen different acts will showcase their talents throughout the winding trails of Cascades Park. The musical stylings include carolers, choruses, instrumentalists and more!

As you stroll through the park letting the sights and sounds of the season warm your spirit, treat yourself to free hot cocoa, while supplies last. Check Talgov.com closer to the event date for more details.

Cookies with Santa

Gather the family and head to Jack McLean Community Center, 700 Paul Russell Road, on Friday, Dec. 12, from 6-8:30 p.m. Enjoy free cookies and hot cocoa, a holiday-themed movie, plus photos and letters with Santa Claus!

For more information, call the Jack McLean Community Center at 850-891-2505.

Elf Night at Dorothy B. Oven Park

Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and a whole host of elves will make an appearance at Dorothy B. Oven Park's annual Elf Night on Thursday, Dec. 18, from 5:30-8 p.m. Over 150,000 lights will twinkle against the night sky, transforming the park into a winter wonderland fit for Santa and all his arctic friends. Visitors are invited to take a stroll around the decorated grounds and let Santa know all the items on their holiday wish list.

If you'd like to visit Santa and Mrs. Claus, upon arrival, check in on the front lawn to be assigned a ticket number on a first-come, first-served basis until all tickets are claimed. While enjoying Elf Night, parents will want to have their cameras ready to record all the smiles and wonderment on their children's faces. Hot cocoa and cookies will be provided by Santa's little helpers, while supplies last.

For safety reasons, vehicles will not be allowed to drive through Oven Park, which is located at 3205 Thomasville Road, during the event. Public parking will be available next to the park at Thomasville Road Baptist Church, 3131 Thomasville Road.

Motorists traveling along Thomasville Road are urged to drive with caution in the vicinity of the park that night. Drivers who typically use Thomasville Road and who are not attending Elf Night should consider using an alternate route. Delays are expected due to heavier than normal traffic along the road during the event.

The park's holiday light display opened on Thanksgiving night and remains open through Jan. 1 from 6-10 p.m. on weekdays and 5:30-11 p.m. on weekends. Visitors can drive through or walk the grounds, weather permitting. Use caution if driving through the park.

For more information about Elf Night and the holiday light display at Dorothy B. Oven Park, call the special holiday hotline at 850-891-3555.
