This week we gather in Clearwater Beach to celebrate 50 years of advancing supports and services for people with disabilities in Florida. The Florida ARF Annual Conference and Awards Luncheon is one of our most meaningful traditions, and this year we are marking half a century of impact.

We close out DSP Recognition Week by celebrating Destiny Pond of Key Training Center.

In four years as an Instructor for Life Skills Development, Destiny has helped three individuals obtain and maintain community employment, with each of them personally crediting her encouragement and belief in their abilities for getting them there. She manages two full work areas each day, volunteers with individuals at Meals on Wheels, and never stops looking for ways to help the people she serves build confidence and independence.

When asked why she does what she does, Destiny's answer is simple: "This is not a job. This is my passion. I want to help people become all they can be."

Thank you, Destiny, for an extraordinary week and every week before it.

Today we recognize Scott Buss, who has been a Direct Support Professional at Community Resource Network of Florida, LLC for 15 years.

Scott is described by CRN as "an amazing caregiver" who treats the people in his care like family. He has helped his client manage daily needs, household responsibilities, finances, and outings, all while ensuring a safe and stable home environment.

When his client experienced the loss of both parents more than eight years ago, Scott became a steady source of stability, encouragement, and emotional support. Through the relationship they have built, Scott empowers his client to make his own decisions and ensures his voice is always heard.

Fifteen years of showing up. Fifteen years of making a difference. Thank you, Scott.

Today we recognize Patrina Pinkett, who has served the individuals at Central Florida Communities for 14 years.

Central Florida Group Homes operates 17 group homes across more than four counties, and Patrina has worked with residents from all 17. She has changed her primary work location multiple times when coverage was needed, including at the organization's most remote locations, sometimes commuting as much as an hour and a half each way.

Patrina was promoted to DSP Supervisor and made the deliberate choice to return to direct support work, because she felt she could make a greater impact working hands-on with residents. That decision says everything about where her heart is.

She has been recognized by her peers as Team Member of the Quarter. Thank you, Patrina.

Today we recognize Nicola Allen, who has served the individuals at Arc Broward for over ten years as a Direct Support Professional.

Nicola's patience, consistency, and skill have produced real results: through her work, two participants significantly reduced maladaptive behaviors and successfully transitioned to the Senior Day Program. She builds trusting relationships that give every individual she serves a sense of purpose, engagement, and an improved quality of life.

Nicola completed the DSPaths credentialing program in 2019, reflecting her commitment not just to the people she supports but to growing as a professional. Her colleagues and management describe her as a model of integrity, humility, and compassion.

Thank you, Nicola. Your dedication over more than a decade speaks for itself.

This week is Direct Support Professional Recognition Week, and we will be celebrating five individuals making a meaningful difference in the lives of the people they serve. We're kicking it off by celebrating Shadija Wells of Ann Storck Center.

In four years as a DSP, Shadija has become known for arriving early and staying late to make sure every individual she supports gets where they need to go safely. She plans birthday celebrations and holiday events, advocates for each person's independence and self-determination, and keeps families, caregivers, and care teams connected and informed.

Shadija treats every individual she supports with fairness, dignity, and genuine compassion. Her professionalism and integrity set the standard.

Thank you, Shadija. We are grateful for your service.
