Ask for Credit Limit Increases

If paying down your debt isn't possible immediately, you can lower your credit utilization ratio another way: Get more credit. Call your credit cards and ask for a credit limit increase. If you've been a good customer (which basically means you've been paying on time), you can probably get an increase immediately. (You can also apply for a new credit card but that temporarily lowers your score due to it being a new account.) However, if you raise your credit limit and then raise your debt by the same amount or more, you're dinging your score. Keep your eye on the ball

CAN A REPO BE REMOVED FROM YOUR CREDIT REPORT? THE ANSWER COMES FROM ONE OF OUR HUD CERTIFIED STAFF COUNSELORS.

Yes, a repossession can be removed from a credit report but how depends on why it’s there and whether it’s being reported correctly.

The big picture
A repo normally stays on a credit report for 7 years from the date of first delinquency.
That said, there are four realistic paths to getting it removed earlier

1. Inaccurate or incomplete reporting (strongest path)
If anything about the repo is wrong, it’s removable under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).
Common issues:
• wrong dates (especially date of first delinquency)
• incorrect balance after sale
• repo listed as open when it’s closed
• missing notice of sale
• duplicate tradelines (lender + collector both reporting incorrectly)

📌 How it comes off:
Dispute with Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion → furnisher can’t verify → must delete.

2. Repo + debt was paid or settled (sometimes works)
Paying it off doesn’t automatically remove it but:
• Pay-for-delete agreements do still happen (quietly)
• Smaller lenders and collections agencies are more flexible than big banks

📌 Key tip:
Get the agreement in writing before paying. Verbal promises don’t count.

3. Repo past the reporting period (automatic removal)
If:
• 7 years have passed since the first missed payment that led to the repo
Then:
• it must be removed even if the balance was never paid
If it’s still showing → that’s a violation, and disputes work fast.

WHAT DOESN'T USUALLY WORK
• “Goodwill letters” (unless hardship + long positive history)
• Just paying it and hoping
• Credit repair templates with no factual basis
