Today is Indigenous Peoples Day, a time to honor the history, cultures, resilience, and contributions of Indigenous peoples and Tribal Nations.

The day also invites us to learn more about the histories that have too often been overlooked, including the lasting impacts of colonization and the continued strength of Indigenous communities today.

For educators, learning and sharing accurate history is one way we can help children grow with curiosity, respect, and understanding.

Take a moment today to listen, learn, and recognize the Indigenous peoples whose histories and communities are an important part of our shared story. ❤️

Did you know Head Start programs integrate mental health support into services for children and families across Florida?

In 2025, 4,834 Florida families received mental health services through Head Start and Early Head Start. Programs also provided mental health consultation to 2,701 teachers, home visitors, and family child care providers.

That’s part of Head Start’s whole-child approach, supporting children’s social and emotional development while helping families navigate challenges.

On World Mental Health Day, FHSA recognizes the Head Start professionals helping children and families build resilience, confidence, and a foundation for brighter futures.

Young children need support, not a path out of the classroom.

Proposed changes to Head Start rules could make it easier for programs to suspend or expel young children. For Florida’s Head Start community, that raises important questions about how we support children with challenging behaviors while keeping them connected to the early learning services they and their families rely on.

FHSA Executive Director Wanda Minick spoke with The 74 about what these proposed changes could mean for Florida’s children, families, and Head Start programs.

The AP also published the story, bringing Florida’s perspective further into the national conversation.

Programs, staff, families, and Head Start partners can submit their own comments and share, in their own words, what these proposed changes could mean for the children, families, and communities they serve.

Florida Head Start programs gathered in Washington, D.C. this week as part of a nationwide initiative led by the National Head Start Association to help policymakers understand what’s at stake for children and families if the Administration for Children and Families - ACF's proposed rule, “Reducing Federal Burden for Head Start Programs,” moves forward.

The proposed rule would eliminate core Head Start Program Performance Standards — including health, mental health, family engagement, ratios, duration, DLL supports, and protections against suspension and expulsion — and replace them with minimal state licensing requirements. For Florida, where licensing focuses on basic safety rather than child development, this would reduce the quality, scope, and type of services children and families receive.

Now, we need Florida’s Head Start community to make your voice heard.

Tell policymakers, in your own words, what these proposed changes would mean for the children and families you serve, the staff who support them, and the stability of Head Start programs across our state.
