Build a Pack They Can’t Wait to Come Back To!

What keeps Cub Scouts coming back?

Fun, friendships, and something to look forward to!

As we welcome new families this fall, let’s give them reasons to stay.

A strong pack starts with a few simple habits:

👉 Ask Scouts what they enjoy and build those interests into your program.
👉 Keep families connected with movie nights, fishing, bike rides, and other simple outings.
👉 Make camping welcoming with local campouts, campfire skits, and support for first-time camping families.
👉 Share your annual calendar early and send timely reminders.
👉 Involve parents and help families build friendships of their own.

Every activity is an opportunity to live the Scout Law, strengthen friendships, and help families feel they belong.

Keep Your Families Connected... Now Is the Time to Reach Out!

October and November are coming fast, and so are membership drops. Families who joined in August and September 2025 are reaching the end of their registration period.

On the first of every month, each unit Key 3 member receives a membership renewal report showing:

💎 Members due to renew within three months
💎 Members who have renewed
💎 Members who have dropped
💎 Members who have opted out

A simple text or email can make a difference. When you reach out:

💎 Need help renewing? Walk them through the process.
💎 Ready to leave? Ask why.
💎 Not the right fit? Help connect them with another unit.
💎 Seeing a pattern? Use the feedback to improve your program.

Have a Plan: Build your contact list, assign someone to reach each family, prepare a short message, and track the results.

Don’t wait for a name to disappear from the roster. Reach out now, offer help, and remind families they belong.

📢 Scouting America Membership Renewal Changes Coming (2026–2028)

Scouting America is transitioning all unit and member renewals to a February renewal cycle to simplify the membership process and better align with recruiting season.

Key highlights:

✅ Unit renewals begin transitioning in September 2026.
✅ Individual member renewals transition throughout 2027 using prorated fees.
✅ By February 2028, all units and members will renew on the same annual February schedule.

The new system will create one consistent renewal season, reduce barriers for new members with prorated fees, eliminate the 2-month lapse period, align Safeguarding Youth Training with renewal dates, and give unit leaders more control over the renewal process.

The goal is to improve retention, make renewals easier, and strengthen membership growth across Scouting.

Stay tuned for more details as the transition rolls out!

🎣 Merit Badge Spotlight: Fishing Merit Badge

Parents, Scout leaders, and merit badge counselors—have you taken a closer look at the Fishing Merit Badge recently?

Fishing has long been a favorite Scouting activity, but this merit badge is about much more than catching fish. Scouts learn outdoor skills, conservation ethics, patience, and responsibility while gaining confidence in one of the world's oldest recreational pursuits.

Scouts working on this badge will:

🛟 Learn to identify hazards associated with fishing and understand how to prevent and respond to emergencies

🩹 Review first aid for common fishing injuries and outdoor concerns, including puncture wounds, insect bites, dehydration, hypothermia, heat-related illnesses, and sunburn

🪝 Demonstrate how to safely remove a barbed hook and discuss essential fishing safety practices

🎣 Explore different types of rods, reels, and fishing equipment, including how to use and maintain them properly

🪢 Master important fishing knots, including the improved clinch knot, Palomar knot, uni knot, uni-to-uni knot, and arbor knot

🐟 Identify artificial lures and natural baits and understand when and how each is used

🌿 Discuss Leave No Trace, the Outdoor Code, and the importance of protecting fishing resources through ethical practices such as catch and release

📖 Learn local fishing regulations and understand how they support conservation and sustainable fisheries

🤝 Explore sportsmanship, courtesy, and respect for property owners and fellow anglers

🎯 Catch and identify a fish using the skills they've developed

🍳 Clean and prepare a fish for cooking, gaining an appreciation for where food comes from and the responsibility that comes with harvesting natural resources

For adults, the Fishing Merit Badge provides an opportunity to pass along traditions, mentor Scouts in outdoor skills, and reinforce the values of stewardship and patience. Fishing teaches that success isn't always measured by the size of the catch—sometimes it's found in quiet moments, persistence, observation, and time spent together outdoors.

Whether a Scout becomes a lifelong angler or simply enjoys a weekend at the lake, the Fishing Merit Badge offers practical skills, memorable experiences, and lessons that extend far beyond the shoreline.

📢 Scout Leaders — Be on the lookout for “Jess”!

Starting with the new BeAScout updates, you may receive a text, email, or phone call from “Jess.” Jess is a virtual AI membership engagement assistant being piloted by Scouting America to help units update their BeAScout pins.

Since August 3, 2026, BeAScout pins have included new fields that units need to update. Jess may ask a few quick questions about your meeting location, meeting days and times, unit fees, and what makes your unit special. The process takes about a minute, and your answers will automatically update your BeAScout pin.

Keeping this information current makes it easier for families searching for Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing, and other Scouting opportunities to find and connect with your unit.

✅ Already updated the new fields on or after August 3? You should be all set!

⚙️ Prefer to update it yourself? Visit my.scouting.org and update your BeAScout pin.

Please share with your fellow unit leaders so everyone knows to be on the lookout for Jess — the AI one, that is! ⚜️
