📣Meet Winnifred aka Winnie 😻 Thanks to our wonderful supporters, we were able to get her the emergency care over the weekend as she was critically anemic and needed blood.
Unfortunately for our girl Winnie, the shelter has received the tests back which determine whether her anemia was due to a treatable, infectious cause (mycoplasma) - and the result came back negative.
What this means is that the anemia is likely related to the severe flea infestation, or conditions secondary to her Feline Leukemia infection (bone marrow dysplasia, cancer).
With that being said, her prognosis for long term survival is not very good.
At this moment in time, she remains in good spirits and is eating. Her level of red blood cells has dropped from 17% after her blood transfusion to 11% for the last 2 days. It may level out, continue to drop, or if miracles occur, start to creep back up.
This beautiful girl is currently living at St. Tammany Parish Department of Animal Services, and we would love for her to spend time in a home.
The home must not have other cats or the foster/adopter must find a way keep Winnie completely separate from other cats.
If the home she goes to would like to follow up with a private vet (full adoption with fees waived), we would welcome that. If not, our shelter vet will schedule periodic rechecks (this would be considered a FOSPICE situation).
We cannot accurately guess how long our girl has left, but we sincerely hope that she can spend that time in the comfort of a home.
Please message us, or call the shelter at 985-809-0183, and we can put you in touch with Dr. Johnston.
