FMIU would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Andres and Melissa Fernandez and the Lucy Fernandez Foundation for their powerful and moving presentation at this year’s annual conference. Sharing Lucy’s story with a room full of marine patrol units from across the state created a deeply meaningful moment, reminding all in attendance of the real lives impacted by boating safety and the critical role these officers play every day.

FOUR AMERICANS ARRESTED FOR POACHING

Police on Grand Bahama are assisting with investigations concerning four men in connection with a suspected poaching incident that occurred on Friday in waters off West End.

Patrolling officers from the Royal Bahamas Defence Force intercepted a vessel near Memory Rock. Once onboard the vessel, officers discovered that the four American men were engaging in illegal fishing in the exclusive fishery zone of the Bahamas without authorization. The vessel was escorted to shore, where over 70 pounds of assorted fish were discovered, which led to the arrest of the four men, aged 67, 39, 38, and 29.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force acknowledges the collaborative efforts of the Royal Bahamas
Defence Force, Bahamas Customs Department, Bahamas Department of Immigration, and the
Department of Marine Resources.
