Tallahassee's non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, treatment, and rehabilitation of sick and injured companion animals. (850) 385-8181

It is CARE’s objective to see that no pet is denied medical treatment or euthanized due to lack of funds by owners or shelter organizations. It is our mission to appropriately treat these animals with the care they deserve through rehabilitation and kindness. CARE also makes sure each animal is spayed/neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped! Last, but not least, we then find these animals their forever homes. While there are several rescue groups and one local shelter, with the exception of one in-house program at a local veterinary hospital, CARE is the only organization with the sole mission to target this unique population. CARE was founded in direct response to this need, and to help abate the overwhelming number of euthanized animals at the local shelter. Join us in helping our furry companion friends!

😻 Meet Meep, a rescued CARE kitten who came to our hospital as a tiny kitten, had one episode of illness but recovered and was adopted. Afterward, her owner came home from work one day to find her unresponsive and neurologically abnormal suddenly.
🩻 After many tests we concluded it was likely a Portosystemic Shunt (PSS) - an inherited defect some animals are born with which lets the blood collected from their intestinal tract go straight to their brain, without being filtered through the liver first, resulting in intermittent neurological signs and seizures in many.
💊 She was started on medications to reduce the symptoms and help her get stronger and grow bigger before surgery. While this is typically a surgery we would refer to a board certified specialist whenever possible, since she was a rescue, one of our veterinarians who’s helped others with this condition was willing to try the surgery here.
👩🏻‍⚕️Thankfully, we were able to locate the abnormal blood vessel and place a special slowly constricting device on it to allow her body to adjust to the new normalizing blood flow to her liver.
🎉 She did excellent! Meep is now fully recovered, with normal liver function, and no more seizure/neurologic abnormalities, and is off medications and back to living as a normal cat in her forever home.
🙏 Thanks to all who donate to CARE to help them be able to fund complex cases like these- it really makes a difference!
