"Smell alerts the brain to the mundane, like dirty clothes, and the risky, like spoiled food. Without this form of detection, “people get anxious about things,” Dr. Dalton said."

“From a public health perspective, this is really important,” Dr. Datta said. “If you think worldwide about the number of people with Covid, even if only 10 percent have a more prolonged smell loss, we’re talking about potentially millions of people.”

As the coronavirus claims more victims, a once-rare diagnosis is receiving new attention from scientists, who fear it may affect nutrition and mental health.

The toll of self-inflicted gun deaths has led to an unusual alliance between su***de-prevention advocates and gun-rights proponents.

"People recovering from COVID-19 were about twice as likely to be diagnosed with a mental health disorder as compared with someone who had the flu."

Those recovering from the coronavirus were more likely than other groups of patients to be diagnosed with a mental disorder within three months, according to a new study.

An approach called contingency management rewards drug users with money and prizes for staying abstinent. But few programs offer it, in part because of moral objections to the concept.

“Of 93 observational studies, two-thirds found lower rates of depressive disorder with fewer depressive symptoms in persons who were more religious. In 34 studies that did not find a similar relationship, only 4 found that being religious was associated with more depression. Of 22 longitudinal studies, 15 found that greater religiousness predicted mild symptoms and faster remission at follow-up.”

Until the early 19th century, psychiatry and religion were closely connected. Religious institutions were responsible for the care of the mentally ill. A major change occurred when Charcot1 and his pupil Freud2 associated religion with hysteria and neurosis. This created a divide between religion an...

“60.7% of people with bipolar I disorder (considered the more severe form of the disorder) had some kind of co-occurring substance abuse or dependence, while 48.1% of those with bipolar II disorder (generally considered less severe) had some kind of co-occurring substance abuse or dependence. These numbers are significantly higher than in any other mood disorder, including non-bipolar major depression.”

Undetected bipolar disorder often frustrates addiction recovery.

Today is National Physician Su***de Awareness Day. To honor this day, we could discuss the statistics of how 300-400 physicians die each year due to su***de. But, instead, this is the story of Dr. Justin Bullock, a resident physician with Bipolar Disorder. A narrative of survival.
