Stone, a native of Blountstown, FL and a professor in the College of Education at Florida State University opened a home for students to live rent-free and cooperatively while pursuing their degrees. As we embark on this new academic year, we’d like to extend our sincerest gratitude to our 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓–𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐁𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 for their commendable work during their term.⁣
⁣
For the past year, 𝐑𝐲𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐒𝐭 𝐄𝐥𝐨𝐢 and 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐬 have represented the SSF student body and led the 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐞 in their regions.⁣
⁣
In North Florida, Ryancy turned a committee few residents could name into one they wanted to join. Regular gatherings built around food, games, and laughter gave residents a place to meet people outside their own house and say what they hoped to see change.⁣
⁣
In Central Florida, Natasha launched a garden program designed to give the houses something to build in common. Her “plant fairies” asked each house what it wanted to grow, then delivered a decorated pot planted with those seeds — the first step toward a garden tended across houses rather than within them. Hartman-Kiwanis’s flowered over the summer under the attentive care of their RAC representative. She closed the year at the end-of-year banquet with a video of residents from every house sending off their graduates.⁣

As their terms conclude, the Southern Scholarship Foundation extends its sincere thanks to Ryancy and Natasha for their service to the resident scholar community and for the care and initiative they brought to representing their peers. Introductions for the incoming representatives are coming soon.⁣

A generous supporter of the Foundation put $25,000 on the table and challenged this community to match it, dollar for dollar.

You did. All of it.

With every gift doubled, the campaign closed at $𝟏𝟐𝟗,𝟕𝟗𝟒 — 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐭𝐬 $𝟏𝟐𝟓,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥.

A special thank-you to the Foundation supporter whose $25,000 challenge helped make this campaign a success and inspired many to act. Your impact will be felt by future resident scholars for years to come.

A room in one of SSF's scholarship houses was once someone's turning point — the place where a degree became possible, where a stranger down the hall became a lifelong friend, where a student found their footing and never lost it. This month, you provided that room for someone else.

Their turning point starts this fall. And it starts thanks to you. 💙

This weekend marked ten years since Dr. Shawn Woodin became President & CEO of Southern Scholarship Foundation — and we couldn't let the milestone pass without saying thank you. 🎉

Ten years, in SSF terms, means generation after generation of resident scholars: students who arrived, found their footing, led their houses, earned their degrees, and went on to build lives of their own. All of it has unfolded under Dr. Woodin's leadership.

Some of what this decade made possible can be counted: an estimated $55.5 million in housing-cost savings, more than 7,515 semesters in which rent was one thing our students never had to worry about.

Some of it can be seen: three new facilities built, and more than $10 million invested in renovating the scholarship houses our students call home.

Some of it opened new doors: he created our Applied Leadership Development Program and led a successful change in Florida statutes so families can apply Florida Prepaid Dorm Plan funds toward SSF housing.

And some of it strengthened the Foundation itself: he initiated our first capital campaign, guided us through our first rigorous external evaluation, and secured our first two $1 million+ grants.

But the truest measure of these ten years is harder to count: well-run houses, confident students, and a culture of mutual support that keeps SSF what it has always promised to be — a living and learning community.

Congratulations, Dr. Woodin, and thank you for a decade of leadership worthy of the students it serves. Here's to the decade ahead.

Starting right now, every dollar given to the Alumni Legacy Campaign is matched one for one, up to $25,000, all thanks to a generous supporter who looked at what our alumni have built and decided to bet on them.

Happy Fourth of July.

Two hundred and fifty years ago, a country set out on the idea that where you start shouldn't decide how far you go. It was more promise than fact then, and every generation since has had a hand in making it truer, in the person who reached back for the one coming up behind, the doors held open a little wider each generation, and in the scholarships that made the next step possible.

For SSF resident scholars, that idea has an address: a rent-free living and learning community, so the cost of housing never stands between a student and a degree.

Twenty years in, and Norman Moore is still the person our resident scholars can count on when something goes wrong.

As SSF's Director of Maintenance for North Florida, Norman keeps our 17 scholarship houses in Tallahassee safe, working, and comfortable for the students who live in them. And even though most resident scholars never see what that takes--the late-night calls, the holiday emergencies, and the readiness to solve a problem in a house before it ever becomes a problem for the students inside it-- Norman's dedication is an integral part of what makes each SSF house feel like home.

Happy belated 20th anniversary, Norman. Thank you for twenty years of looking out for our resident scholars. We're lucky and proud to have you.

Savannah Morgan, resident scholar of the Malthouse-Pilot Scholarship House in Fort Myers, is an for her exceptional academic achievement, leadership, and commitment to service.

A proud Bright Futures Scholarship recipient and Honors student, Savannah continues to excel academically while also taking part in service opportunities. This year she participated in a service trip to the Dominican Republic, where she was secretary for a student organization. Her dedication to leadership, global engagement, and making a positive impact reflects the values that define SSF resident scholars.

Stifi John, resident scholar of the Hawksley Scholarship House in Gainesville, is an for her commitment to advocacy, community engagement, and student leadership through Chispas UF.

As a new ambassador for the organization, Stifi has helped raise awareness about immigrant rights by visiting classrooms and collaborating with other student organizations to share the club’s mission and encourage greater student involvement. Through her outreach and advocacy efforts, she is helping foster meaningful conversations and build a stronger sense of community on campus.

Hailey Jenkins, resident scholar of the Hansen FAMU Scholarship House in Tallahassee, is recognized as an for her leadership and continued impact within the Florida A&M University School of Business and Industry.

Recently serving as AVP of Recruitment, Hailey dedicated her time to connecting with local high school students and sharing the many academic and professional opportunities available through FAMU’s School of Business and Industry. Through her outreach, leadership, and ability to positively represent the program, she made such a strong impact that she was invited to return next year as Vice President.
