Southern Scholarship Foundation A Rent-Free Living and Learning Community

Stone, a native of Blountstown, FL and a professor in the College of Education at Florida State University opened a home for students to live rent-free and cooperatively while pursuing their degrees. He made it possible for these students to stay in school and follow their dreams. This house was the first of many Southern Scholarship Foundation houses. Today, the Southern Scholarship Foundation owns and operates 27 scholarship houses at 7 different campuses in the state of Florida. Every resident in our Tallahassee scholarship houses is safe after Hurricane Isaias.

SSF staff inspected every house this morning. No significant damage was found, and all houses have power.

Thank you to our residents for staying safe, to our staff for their work before and after the storm, and to the families who checked in on their students. Our thoughts are with our Tallahassee neighbors who are still recovering.

๐‰๐ก๐š๐ง๐ž๐ฅ ๐’๐ญ๐š๐ง๐ฅ๐ž๐ฒ, House Manager at McKaig-Malthouse in Tallahassee, represents North Florida. ๐ƒ๐ฎ๐œ๐ก๐ง๐š๐ก ๐‘๐ข๐œ๐ก๐š๐ซ๐, of MET Pilot in Gainesville, represents Central Florida.โฃ

SSFโ€™s Student Board Representatives are a vital voice on the Foundationโ€™s Board, weighing in and voting on the decisions that shape SSF with the daily reality of house life in hand. They see what no board report can capture: which houses are thriving, where scholars are struggling to connect, and what SSF looks like from the inside.โฃ

Jhanel is a ๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐€๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง major with a concentration in ๐„๐œ๐จ๐ง๐จ๐ฆ๐ข๐œ๐ฌ at Florida A&M University, graduating in May 2028. Sheโ€™s from Sanford, spent two years at LaVerne Weddle Pilot, and is now in her first semester as House Manager of McKaig-Malthouse.โฃ
โฃ
A first-generation college student, she says she didnโ€™t fully register what SSF had given her until she left to study abroad โ€” the leading, the communicating, the managing responsibility. Sheโ€™s been drawing on it since.โฃ
โฃ
On why she took the role: โ€œSSF has poured into me, and this is a way I wanted to pour back into the foundation with intention and integrity.โ€โฃ
โฃ
Her focus on the Board is visibility โ€” making sure students whoโ€™d thrive at SSF actually find out it exists.

Duchnah is an ๐„๐๐ฎ๐œ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐’๐œ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž๐ฌ major at the University of Florida, graduating in May 2028, with plans to pursue a Master of Health Administration in Texas.โฃ
โฃ
Her focus on the Board is connecting SSFโ€™s houses to each other. With scholars spread across Tallahassee, Gainesville, and Fort Myers, she wants resident scholars in one city to know the ones in another โ€” and sheโ€™s looking for practical ways to make that happen.โฃ

Asked what sheโ€™d tell a student considering SSF, she said: โ€œI would tell them to go for it!โ€

For the past year, ๐‘๐ฒ๐š๐ง๐œ๐ฒ ๐’๐ญ ๐„๐ฅ๐จ๐ข and ๐๐š๐ญ๐š๐ฌ๐ก๐š ๐‚๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ have represented the SSF student body and led the ๐‘๐ž๐ฌ๐ข๐๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐€๐๐ฏ๐ข๐ฌ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐‚๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ž in their regions.โฃ

In North Florida, Ryancy turned a committee few residents could name into one they wanted to join. Regular gatherings built around food, games, and laughter gave residents a place to meet people outside their own house and say what they hoped to see change.โฃ
โฃ
In Central Florida, Natasha launched a garden program designed to give the houses something to build in common. Her โ€œplant fairiesโ€ asked each house what it wanted to grow, then delivered a decorated pot planted with those seeds โ€” the first step toward a garden tended across houses rather than within them. Hartman-Kiwanisโ€™s flowered over the summer under the attentive care of their RAC representative. She closed the year at the end-of-year banquet with a video of residents from every house sending off their graduates.โฃ

As their terms conclude, the Southern Scholarship Foundation extends its sincere thanks to Ryancy and Natasha for their service to the resident scholar community and for the care and initiative they brought to representing their peers.
