In September, Florida leaders and the Catalyst Project kicked off the 2025 Florida Anne Braden cohort! As part of each cohort, we get to hear from incredible speakers across the three-part Anti-Racist Organizing Panel Series. During our first panel, Indigenous Leaders Fighting for Decolonization, we will get a chance to hear about the work happening from the Everglades to Palestine and across Turtle Island.

This virtual panel will include panelists William “Popeye” Osceola, Secretary of the Miccosukee Tribe, Karla Bautista, coordinator of Proyecto Liberación, and Reem Monzer Elkhaldi, Esq. the Executive Director of Healing our Homeland. These visionary leaders will discuss the ways they are fighting the key struggles of our time while advancing visions of collective liberation that center the communities most impacted by colonization. ASL, Spanish language interpretation, and live captioning will be available. You’ll also have a chance to move resources to these incredible organizers and their organizations!

“We must become involved in the fight against racism as if our lives depend on it- because in truth, they do.” - Anne Braden

100 years ago today, Anne Braden was born. She was a white Kentuckian and leader in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and mentor to other white antiracist organizers, including people who helped found SURJ. For the majority of her decades on this earth, Anne dedicated herself to fighting racism, bringing white people into the conversation at a time when few white folks were publicly and loudly aligning themselves with Black leaders in the civil rights movement. Though she passed in 2006, Anne’s legacy remains – in the way that her work influences so many racial justice efforts like SURJ’s, and through the Braden Center in Louisville, which remains a crucial community meeting space for folks continuing this work. Honoring our ancestors who paved the way for mobilizing white people into racial justice efforts is an important part of keeping their teachings alive. Please consider donating to the center in celebration of Anne’s 100th birthday. Happy birthday, Anne Braden! 🎉 Link in the comments to give.
