Did you know National Disability Employment Awareness Month has roots dating back more than 80 years?

In 1945, as World War II veterans (many of whom became individuals with disabilities during the war) returned home and sought employment, Congress designated the first week of October as "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week." In 1962, the word "physically" was removed from the name to recognize people with all types of disabilities. Then, in 1988, Congress expanded the observance to the entire month of October, establishing National Disability Employment Awareness Month as we know it today.

More than eight decades later, continues to highlight the talents and contributions of people with disabilities in America's workforce, while reminding us of the importance of creating pathways to meaningful employment. At The Able Trust, we are proud to support that mission by working with partners across Florida to advance employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

Transition services are important for youth with disabilities as they move from high school to their next steps, including postsecondary education, employment and independent living. Students in The Able Trust's program develop their interests, meet with employers and career field experts, and learn about postsecondary education options--all in a supportive environment. Experiences like these help young people with disabilities identify their strengths, explore careers and build a pathway toward meaningful employment.

October is Disability Employment Awareness Month, and Publix continues to be a leader in employing individuals with disabilities at all levels of the organization--from entry-level positions at local supermarkets all the way to the C-suite. We at The Able Trust value Publix as both a longtime partner and a strong example of how employers can expand opportunities for people with disabilities throughout their careers.

Since 2005, September has been recognized as National Workforce Development Month. Strong workforce training can be helpful in successfully landing a new job or advancing in a current career field for all Floridians, including those with disabilities.

Research shows employers are 86% more likely to interview a job candidate with a workforce credential related to key skills for the position. An accredited workforce training program is one outstanding pathway to more rewarding employment opportunities for Floridians with disabilities.

The High School High Tech Class of 2026 continues to impress: 77% of this year's graduates indicated they plan to continue their education at a state college, technical school, university, professional apprenticeship or in other postsecondary training. This is a 16 percentage point increase over last year's rate of postsecondary education interest!

According to the latest National Trends in Disability Employment Jobs Report, the employment-to-population ratio for Americans with disabilities rose to 39.8% in August 2026, tying the previous all-time high rate. This metric represents the percentage of a population that is currently employed.

While the nationwide rise in disability employment is encouraging, challenges still exist for Floridians with disabilities. Learn more about how The Able Trust is working to improve workforce success rates for individuals with disabilities in the latest edition of our Empower newsletter.

Exciting news: We are thrilled to share that 100% of participating seniors graduated this past school year! This achievement is a testament to the tremendous work, care and dedication among High School High Tech program staff, teachers, parents, students and more.

The Able Trust’s High School High Tech program supports Florida students with disabilities through career exploration, work-based learning, workplace readiness, self-advocacy and exposure to postsecondary education and training options. These components help to prepare students for increased odds of success in their future educational and professional journeys.

We were honored to receive a $3,000 grant for from our friends at the Capital City Bank Foundation. Regional Executive Don May visited last week to present the gift, which will help support the High School High Tech program for Florida students with disabilities, to our President and CEO Allison Chase and VP of Development and Marketing Donna Wright.

As our workforce continues to evolve, postsecondary training is vital to ensure students can make a successful transition from high school to their future careers. Educating Florida's youth with disabilities about their options in college and technical school is a key component of High School High Tech. We appreciate Capital City Bank's long-standing support of our mission to serve Floridians with disabilities.

After he did an excellent job in his on-the-job training in a hospital kitchen, Hernando County student Max advocated to his Vocational Rehabilitation counselor and job coach that he could do more challenging work. He now has an on-the-job training working with blood at that same hospital.

Through the High School High Tech program, Florida students with disabilities like Max engage in activities that help them learn self-advocacy and strengthen communication abilities in addition to exploring career and education options. These crucial skills serve participating students well long after crossing the graduation stage. We are proud of Max for speaking up on his own behalf, and wish him continued success in his field!
